Notre Belle Bete on the way back

With 13 runners declared, the Racing Welfare Handicap (3.23) looks like a good betting race and it’s worth taking a chance on Notre Belle Bete, who might just be coming back to form.

Notre Belle Bete looked one to follow when winning at Kempton in April and he went off a heavily backed 100-30 favourite for a hot 1m1f handicap at this course on the back of that.

He finished third behind Cap Francais, but lost second near the finish and may have found the extra furlong stretching him.

He lost his form after that, but ran well when third at Kempton last time - held up at the back in a slowly run race he made relentless late progress to make the places.

He was still coming at the finish and would have been closer with a stronger pace to help him - he might just get that this time and can go two better.

Conservationist an exciting prospect

There are some exciting horses lining up in the Listed British Stallion Studs EBF Montrose Fillies’ Stakes (3.58), but none look better than recent Haydock winner Conservationist.

The Muhaarar filly was beaten only by the subsequent Oh So Sharp runner-up Lose Yourself when second on her debut in a 7f novice on the July course in August, and she improved for the mile distance when scoring at Haydock, making all to win going away by a wide margin.

Conservationist will need to improve again, but her dam is useful Listed winner Zuhoor Baynoona, so she is bred to be smart and she is totally unexposed and open to more progress.

Riot can go on the rampage

The Christmas Parties At Newmarket Handicap (5.08) brings the curtain down on the season at Newmarket and Riot looks capable of bouncing back on his return to a straight course.

Riot showed his liking for a straight 7f when third in last year’s Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot behind multiple subsequent Group 1 winner Highfield Princess, and a reproduction of that form would definitely be good enough. The problem is he has shown little since that run.

He failed to win in a spell for Johnny Murtagh in Ireland, but has run only three times since joining David O’Meara’s stable and he made the frame in both of his outings on turf at Ayr.

Riot shaped like he might be capable of winning a race like this when a strong-finishing third on his debut for the O’Meara yard at Ayr in August and again caught the eye in fourth there last time behind three horses who have gone on to record higher Racing Post Ratings since.

The handicapper has dropped Riot 2lb for what was a perfectly solid effort and I’m expecting him to bounce back here for a stable that has become famed for getting the best out of this type of cast-off from other yards.

Danny Tudhope is also a positive coming south for the ride.
