Australian Football: Glory skipper moves on

Perth Glory have parted company with captain Brandon O’Neill after agreeing to release the midfielder from the remaining two years of his contract.

O’Neill only signed for Glory ahead of the 2021/22 A-League campaign, penning a three-year contract, and was named as skipper by then boss Richard Garcia.

Tough season

However following a difficult season for the club, which resulted in Garcia being axed, O’Neill is also heading for the exit door, citing family reasons for his request to move on.

Glory have accepted it and revealed their disappointment at the player’s decision when the news was announced on Friday.

"Brandon was made captain of the club and for him to now ask for a release one year into a three-year deal is naturally very disappointing," Glory chief executive Tony Pignata said. "However, if a player no longer wishes to play for Perth Glory, there is no point in forcing them to stay."

O’Neill disappointed

O’Neill has also revealed his disappointment and says the decision has nothing to do with the restructure of the club that sees Ruben Zadkovich take over as head coach.

"It is unfortunate how things have worked out since I came back to the club last year," O'Neill said in a statement. "But Perth Glory will always retain a special place in my heart.

"I believe Glory is in great hands going forward following the recent changes in the football department and my decision was made before any of this materialised, based on my feeling of not being able to perform in Perth."
