Aussie Rules: Fremantle sink Cats to stay second

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says it is important for his players to stay grounded after they showed they are genuine premiership contenders with a three-point win at Geelong.

The Dockers are out to win the 2022 AFL grand final and the win over the Cats keeps them second on the ladder with six wins from seven games.

Tough test passed

The trip to Geelong was always going to be a test of Fremantle’s flag credentials and they passed it with flying colours, emerging 69-66 winners.

Longmuir says he always believed his side could compete with the best but told reporters after the game they have done nothing yet and there is still a long way to go.

"I do (believe that they can compete with the best) because we're playing a really strong, defensive, contested game and we're able to adapt in games," he said.

"But we haven't done anything as a footy club yet, or this year anyway. We've got plenty of work ahead of us and this game's got a real knack of pulling you into line if you get too far ahead of yourself."

Great win

The victory was just Fremantle’s fourth in 19 games at Kardinia Park and Longmuir says it was one to enjoy before focusing back on the job in hand.

"I don't know where it (the win) stacks. As a coach, you don't really sit around rating them but it was a great win," Longmuir added. "We came down here prepared for an arm wrestle and prepared to go the distance, because that's what you have to do down here.

"We fought and that's become a part of our brand is we just keep fighting and we were able to do that."
