Esports: LPL Summer Playoffs Tuesday & Wednesday matches

With only two days separating the League of Legends Pro League Summer regular season and the beginning of the playoffs, China is the first major region in the world to move into its summer postseason.

And the LPL Summer playoffs are like no other with ten teams having qualified for the knockouts with four set to be eliminated in the single-elimination bracket before double elimination even kicks in.

That means the teams which finished in the top four of the LPL regular season have a significant advantage in that defeat in the playoffs will not immediately spell the end of their campaigns.

The same cannot be said for OMG, FunPlus Phoenix, LNG Esports and Bilibili Gaming, who all get the LPL Summer playoffs underway on Tuesday and Wednesday but know defeats in their first playoff contests will send them home.

The overall winners of the LPL Summer playoffs will get China's top seed at the League of Legends World Championship with the top three all reaching the group stage and the fourth-placed side qualifying for the tournament's play-in stage.

OMG -137, FunPlus Phoenix -100

Tight opener expected in LPL Summer Playoffs

FunPlus Phoenix were eliminated in the first round of the LPL Spring playoffs earlier this year, whereas OMG did not even make it out of the regular season, so neither side is renowned for going deep in these splits recently.

FunPlus Phoenix secured their playoff berth with a win over basement boys Team WE in their final match of the regular season, finishing with a 7-9 record.

As for OMG Gaming, they also wrapped up the regular season with a win, prevailing 2-1 against Invictus Gaming to make it eight wins and eight defeats from their 16 outings.

FunPlus have a standout jungler in Kim "Clid" Tae-min, who has picked up seven player of the match awards this season, but these two sides are pretty well-matched and tough to separate at this early stage in the playoffs.

Their previous meeting in the LPL Summer regular season saw OMG win 2-1 but it was a tight game and punters should perhaps steer clear of the match result markets.

Backing over 4.5 maps might also not be the right move given each of FunPlus Phoenix's last four matches have been settled by 2-0 scorelines, so the better way to play it could be under 26.5 kills on map one.

This could be a slow burner and it is worth noting that FunPlus saw 21 first-map kills registered in their last game against Team WE, 20 against Weibo Gaming and 18 against Ultra Prime going back to the start of the month.

LNG Esports v Bilibili Gaming, LPL Summer Playoffs

LNG Esports -250, Bilibili Gaming +175

LNG should be too strong for Bilibili Gaming

Bilibili Gaming took it up a gear in the last couple of weeks of the LPL Summer regular season, recording wins over OMG Gaming and Team WE to book their place in the LPL Summer playoffs.

And although back in the LPL Spring, they managed to progress to the second round of the knockout stage with a win over Rare Atom, they could fall at the first hurdle in the playoffs this time around.

Their first-round playoff opponents LNG Esports finished only several places above them with an 8-8 record but placed seventh courtesy of their superior games differential to OMG.

LNG also made the playoffs at the LPL Spring earlier in the year, having been knocked out by Top Esports in the third round, but they were strong in the regular season, placing fourth in the overall standings with an 11-5 record.

Having been in the hunt for the LPL Summer MVP award with nine player of the match awards collected, Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang has been an excellent mid laner for LNG, who look about right at -250 to beat Bilibili Gaming, who are +175 to prevail.

When these sides met in week one, LNG came out on top 2-1 but they are worth chancing to win by a bigger margin in this best-of-five encounter and could be worth a bet at -1.5 on the match handicap at -110.
