Sunday Esports: Call of Duty League Major Five qualifiers

This season's Call of Duty League continues at a furious pace and on Sunday qualifying for Major Five continues with a triple-header of matches.

Major Five is the final Major to take place in the Call of Duty League this season and will provide teams with one final chance to secure crucial CDL points and book their place in the end-of-season Call of Duty League Championship.

The main event at Major Five will be hosted by the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto later this month but the seedings at the event must firstly be determined by qualifying.

All 12 Call of Duty League teams will be present at the Major Five main event but first play out five qualifiers each.

The first two days of qualifiers are complete with Major Five hosts Toronto Ultra the team to keep an eye on as it stands - they have a 2-0 record - while Atlanta FaZe, Boston Breach and OpTic Texas also won their only matches.

On Sunday there are three games to look forward to as Florida Mutineers clash with LA Guerrillas, Atlanta FaZe and OpTic Texas collide in a huge match and New York Subliners take on LA Thieves.

Neither Florida Mutineers nor LA Guerrillas have ever really looked like genuine contenders for a top-eight place in the overall Call of Duty League standings this season and one gets the impression they are merely playing for pride at this point.

The Mutineers are yet to feature in the Major Five playoffs, while LA Guerrillas have played just once and were outclassed 3-0 by juggernauts Atlanta FaZe as expected, so not a lot could be taken from that match.

Both finished in the bottom two in qualifying for Major Four, having each posted 0-5 win-loss records, although the Mutineers at least made it to the second round of the lower bracket in the main event before they were dumped out.

The Mutineers are just fancied to win this one at 8/15 but neither side makes an appeal and the better bet could be over 4.5 maps at 13/8.

FaZe can edge top-of-the-table tussle with Texas

OddsAtlanta FaZe 11/10, OpTic Texas 4/6

This is the matchup everyone is waiting for on Sunday.

Atlanta FaZe and OpTic Texas occupy the top two positions in the overall Call of Duty League standings this season with 305 and 270 points respectively and they will be getting ready to square off in the end-of-season Call of Duty League Championship.

Bizarrely OpTic Texas have not actually won a Major title in 2023, although they were runners-up at both Major Three and Major Four, while Atlanta FaZe picked up their one title of the campaign in Major Two.

Both of these sides got off to winning starts in qualifying for Major Five - FaZe cruised to a 3-0 win over LA Guerrillas, while OpTic Texas had a tougher time of it in their 3-2 win over Las Vegas Legion.

There is not a lot between these sides but Atlanta FaZe arguably have the edge in experience when it comes to tussles like this, having made the Grand Final of last year's Call of Duty League Championship.

This feels as though it should be a pick'em contest with both teams having the same chance of a win, so that makes Atlanta FaZe the best bet at 11/10.

Subliners and Thieves can run each other close

The final qualifier on Sunday features two teams set to feature in the Call of Duty League Championship but who have work to do if they are to mount a title challenge.

Los Angeles Thieves and New York Subliners are third and fifth respectively in the overall Call of Duty League standings and both have Major titles to their names in 2023.

LA Thieves were also crowned overall champions in 2022 but both they and the Subliners started qualifying for Major Five on the back foot.

While the Subliners were edged 3-2 by Las Vegas Legion, the Thieves were taken down 3-1 by Toronto Ultra.

It is early days in qualifying and it is hard to pick a clear winner in this one, but it would be no surprise if it went the distance so opt for over 4.5 maps at 13/8.
