Australian Football: Cummings stakes Socceroos claim

Central Coast Mariners striker Jason Cummings is hoping to get a call-up to the Socceroos squad for the crucial World Cup qualifying play-offs following his brace on Saturday.

The Mariners are challenging to finish in the A-League top six this season and will have a good chance if Cummings continues to fire home the goals.

Cummings in form

The striker has been in fine form for the Mariners since arriving in the new year and scored another two goals in the 2-2 draw with Western United on Saturday.

If Australia need a striker in form to help them qualify for Qatar then Cummings could be their man and he would love to answer the call.

"I'd love to be there. Of course I'd love to be there, that'd be a dream," Cummings told Paramount Plus. "But it's up to whoever picks the squad.

"I'm available and I'd love it, but my main concentration is just every week playing with the Mariners and doing my best for this team."

Montgomery support

Cummings has five goals and five assists in 12 games and Mariners boss Nick Montgomery also thinks his striker should get the nod.

"He's a goal scorer, he assists, his work rate is phenomenal. He's a top lad and he's put himself out there, he wants to play for the Socceroos," Montgomery said. "He's 26 years old, for me right now, you could get six-seven years good service from a player like him.”
