Horse Racing - Racing: Coroebus in line for Ascot trip

All eyes turn to Royal Ascot for 2,000 Guineas star Coroebus after the Godolphin runner claimed the first British Classic of the season on Saturday.

Having seen off stablemate Native Trial in a one-two at Newmarket for trainer Charlie Appleby, Coroebus will now be aimed at the St James's Palace Stakes, which takes place on the opening day of Royal Ascot and you can follow the race on our Sports Live Streaming platform.

First win for Appleby

The son of Dubawi produced a fantastic effort to claim the spoils at racing HQ and hand Appleby his first winner in the Grade 1 race, with the leading pair clear of Aidan O'Brien's Luxembourg in third.

Coroebus will be following a well-trodden path to Royal Ascot, with the St James’s Palace Stakes a popular next destination for 2,000 Guineas winners.

Poetic Flare completed the double for trainer Jim Bolger last season, while previous Guineas winners Galileo Gold, Dawn Approach and Frankel have also landed both Group 1 races.

Speaking after the Newmarket success, Appleby said: "I'm delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and Team Godolphin. I don't want to stand here and say I'm too cool for school but it really is a team effort with everyone at home, I'm just the one who gets to do the interviews and is given the opportunity to train these horses.

"I said to James, 'Hold him, hold him, hold him and then press the button', and he's just got an electric turn of foot. I'm delighted for James, and for him to have his first Classic for us is special."

Ascot the plan

When asked about the immediate plans for Coroebus, Appleby added: "I'd say we'll go straight to the St James's Palace with Coroebus and we'll go to the Curragh for the Irish 2,000 Guineas with Native Trail where he's done well before."
