Australian Football: City draw in ACL opener

Melbourne City got their ACL Champions League campaign off to a solid start as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Thailand outfit BG Pathum United.

City are priced at 5/4 to win the A-League grand final but for now they are taking a break from domestic competition to fight for glory in the ACL.

Fast start

City got the game off to a very quick start with Andrew Nabbout putting them in front on 22 minutes.

Marco Tilio was involved in the move when feeding the ball to Nabbout, who still had plenty of work to do. The City ace then cut inside and unleashed a stinging shot from outside the area that left the Pathum keeper with no chance.

The home side were not done though and they grabbed an equaliser when Teerasil Dangda headed home a cross from Pathompol Charoenrattanapirom.

Both sides had chances to grab a winner but the score remained at 1-1 and City boss Patrick Kisnorbo was happy to take a point from the opening Group G game.

Solid point

"At the end of the day, we could've scored at the end, we had a few good half chances but , first and foremost for us, it's a good start to our campaign,” Kisnorbo said.

"We know that it's not going to be a perfect game. We're not going to be able to press for 90 minutes, we're not going to have possession for 90 minutes and that's reality. The way we handled it, I thought we did really well."
