NRL: Bulldogs name Barrett replacement

The Canterbury Bulldogs have confirmed Michael Potter as interim coach for the remainder of the 2022 NRL campaign following the departure of Trent Barrett.

The Bulldogs are priced at 22/1 to make the top eight and Potter has now been handed the task of steadying the ship following a hectic few days.

Barrett moves on

Barrett resigned as coach on Monday after picking up just two wins this season and Potter will take the reins while the powers that be weigh up their long-term options.

They include Paul Green and Shane Flanagan and there is a chance that Potter could also come in to the reckoning if he impresses between now and the end of the campaign.

Bulldogs footy boss Phil Gould is delighted with the appointment of Potter who made 80 appearances for the Bulldogs as a player. Helping them win the premiership in 1984 and 1985.

“It is great to have a genuine legend returning to the club,” Gould said. “Michael has extensive experience in the game and will bring a new voice and new ideas to our players. We really appreciate Michael stepping up to help our club at this time.”

Jackson salutes appointment

Meanwhile Bulldogs captain Josh Jackson has also hailed the appointment and says Potter is the man for the job.

“I think he’s a fantastic addition,” Jackson said. “He’s a premiership winner, he’s won two premierships here and he’s got a lot of experience as a head coach. He brings an outside perspective as well, which I think is important.”
