NFL - US Sports: Bolts strike bold trade for Mack

The Los Angeles Chargers made a bold move on Thursday by reportedly trading their 2022 second-round pick and a future sixth-rounder for elite-but-aging Chicago Bears pass-rusher Khalil Mack.

The Chargers, 18/1 to win Super Bowl LVII, are looking to emerge from the shadow of the 10/1 Rams and could be ready to adopt a similar all-or-nothing policy that brought the Vince Lombardi Trophy to the City of Angels.

Mack heads to Cali

Mack spent four seasons in the Windy City where he wasn't able to elevate the team beyond the wild-card round of the playoffs, although the Bears did win the NFC North title in his first year.

The 31-year-old racked up 36 sacks in four seasons with the Bears and earned three Pro Bowl selections, two All-Pro honors and a runner-up finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2018 while there, but he missed most of the 2021 season with a foot injury that required surgery.

Williams pens new deal

The Chargers, who locked up Mike Williams on a three-year $60million deal last week to make him the fifth-highest paid wideout in the NFL, are trying to put all the pieces together around talented quarterback Justin Herbert while he remains on his rookie deal.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that, as part of the deal, the Chargers will take on the entirety of Mack's remaining three-year $63.9million contract, including bonuses.

The Bears won't receive the massive haul they probably expected from a deal involving a top-shelf player, but Mack's departure will free up some salary cap space and add a day two draft pick to the pot for new general manager Ryan Poles to potentially add much-needed-talent to the roster.
