NRL: Barrett rues costly Bulldogs errors

Canterbury Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett hit out at his side’s performance in the 16-6 defeat against Newcastle and says everyone needs to raise their game.

The Bulldogs are out to finish in the top eight of the NRL but as things stand they look on course to pick up another wooden spoon to add to last season’s.

Frustrated Barrett

Canterbury have won just two of their opening 10 games this season and Barrett says the same issues that dog them week in week out are not going away.

"I sound like a broken record," Barrett said. "It's the same every week and it's not good enough. I think everyone does (need to step up). We're just making too many errors and making it too hard for ourselves."

One issue for the Bulldogs is their failure to give enough of the ball to star recruits Matt Burton and Josh Addo-Carr.

"Josh is reliant on a lot of things inside him," Barrett added. "He's got a license to get around the field as well but it's hard to put blame on your winger, but getting him and Burton more ball is (important).

"We need the ball in their hands but you've got to hang onto to it do that."

Knights relieved

Meanwhile Newcastle boss Adam O’Brien was just delighted to snap a losing streak that had seen his side lose the last seven games on the spin.

It was far from pretty but getting the two points is all that mattered to the Knights coach.

"We needed to win, how it looked in terms of attack didn't matter to me," he said. "I just wanted to see that defensive resolve which we showed. It was an important game for us and that showed in our defensive actions."
