Harness Racing: Barrett out to cause upset

Trainer Keith Kenna is confident Barrett has what it takes to upstage his rivals and cause an upset in the Regional Championships State final at Menangle on Saturday night.

Barrett booked his place in the final when finishing third in last week’s Riverina Final and Kenna believes he can improve again when he comes up against a quality field.

Group one glory

Kenna is delighted to make the final but says they are not there just to make up the numbers and they are targeting group one glory.

Kenna’s son Drew has been in the sulky during recent races and will be in control again as the Australian Pacing Gold purchase goes up against the big boys.

"I'm rapt to have him in the Final," Kenna said. "He's been a good horse for us. He came from Sydney and I didn't expect much from him, but he must be enjoying our training methods and lifestyle in the paddock as he's doing really well.

"It was a good drive in the Final by Drew (son) who said he'd go to the fence and hope to get sucked along, which is what happened, he only went around one horse!"

Tough barrier draw

Barrett does not have the best of draws. He will have to jump from barrier eight but Kenna says they can overcome it.

"He's not a horse you can use up early and got to be saved for one sprint," Kenna added. "We've got to hope there is a bit of speed on and he is given the chance to come home as well as he can.

"There's a bit of class in the field, so hopefully that sees them run at a reasonable tempo from the outset."
