Australian Racing: Mystic Mermaid set to step up

There’s five meetings set to take place on Wednesday including metropolitan fixtures at Randwick Kensington, Sandown Lakeside and Belmont Park.

Mystic and McDonald for Randwick triumph

The fourth race at Randwick Kensington looks a highly competitive affair with Mystic Mermaid and Tuhinga vying for favouritism.

The latter has a solid record on wet tracks and has shown improvement with racing in three starts this spell including when following up a third place finish over 1300m here last month with a victory in a Benchmark 64 contest over this course and distance on a heavy 8 track last time out.

The gelding steps up in grade here and while he was third at this level on his penultimate outing he is expected to find Mystic Mermaid too good on this occasion.

Chris Waller’s charge has been in good form this spell finishing in the first four in all seven starts including when narrowly beaten at this level in a race over this distance on a heavy 9 track at Canterbury at the start of the month.

Has the services of top jockey James McDonald once more and looks capable of sitting behind the early pace prior to registering a victory with the pick having broken her maiden over 1600m on a soft 7 track at Newcastle on her penultimate start.

Edith to stay unbeaten

Sabre Princess is expected to jump as favourite for the third race on the Sandown Lakeside card, a 1600m Benchmark 64 contest set to take place on a heavy 9 track.

Patrick Moloney’s mount has shown good form this spell including when coming from off the pace to deliver a victory at this level in a 1318m contest at Geelong at the start of this month.

Has performed well over this distance in the past including when runner-up in a much higher grade at Flemington in May last year but may find impressive debut winner Edith has too much for her in this contest.

Trained by Peter Moody Edith made an impressive start to her racing career when delivering a three length victory in a 1600m maiden at Pakenham Synthetic earlier this month.

Got the better of a number of more experienced rivals on that occasion and while the daughter of Written Tycoon is unproven on heavy tracks she looks likely to prove up to competing in a higher grade than she encounters here and is selected to maintain her unbeaten record.

Change for Belmont Park success

She’s A Sweet Deel is expected to prove fancied in the market ahead of the concluding race on the Belmont Park card, a 1400m event set to take place on a soft 5 track.

The five-year-old has shown fair form in two starts this spell including when fifth over 1300m at this track earlier this month and with a good three from four record at this distance the Dundeel mare is expected to deliver a big effort under Brad Parnham.

No Change however is preferred on this occasion having put a couple of slightly disappointing efforts behind him when finishing runner-up over 1600m on a heavy 8 track here less than two weeks ago.

The quicker ground forecast here is no issue and having had Inflation, another expected to deliver a big effort in this contest back in third last time out No Change is taken to register career win number eight with Paul Harvey booked for the ride.
