Arsenal set the pace, women's boxing hits new heights & shocks aplenty at T20 World Cup

After a stop-start September, the Premier League certainly made up for lost time in October with no fewer than six rounds of fixtures being played.

With the World Cup set to start in November, there was also plenty of Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League action during the month as three rounds of group stage matches were played.

Premier League: Gunners shine while Liverpool slump

Arsenal ended the month at the top of the table but the Gunners were only one point clear of Manchester City, who suffered their first loss of the season in October when they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to mid-table Liverpool.

The Reds also lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest during the month as the pressure grew on boss Jurgen Klopp. The result was a major boost for Forest boss Steve Cooper though after he was handed a new contract during the month despite his side making a grim start to the campaign.

On the managerial front, Aston Villa lost patience with Steven Gerrard and axed the former Liverpool midfielder before replacing him with the Villarreal boss Unai Emery.

However, Wolves are still searching for a new permanent manager despite sacking Bruno Lage at the beginning of October.

Interim head coaches Steve Davis and James Collins remain in charge at Molineux after QPR boss Michael Beale rejected the opportunity to speak to the Premier League side and Julien Lopetegui turned down the chance to take the job.

Manchester United’s form improved in October, but the future of Cristiano Ronaldo remains unclear, particularly after he made the headlines for heading to the tunnel before the match against Tottenam was over.

Cricket: Ireland shock stuttering England

There were plenty of shocks at the T20 World Cup during the month, with England’s five-run loss to Ireland particularly surprising.

The loss of Reece Topley to injury for the whole of the tournament certainly didn’t help England’s cause and they were unimpressive in their five-wicket victory against Afghanistan before seeing their match against Australia washed out.

The Baggy Greens lost their first game in the tournament to New Zealand while Pakistan contrived to lose to Zimbabwe to show that the destination of the trophy is far from certain.

Boxing: Women's boxing hits new heights

An historic night of all-female action failed to disappoint as Claressa Shield unified the middleweight division after convincingly beating Savannah Marshall at London's O2 Arena.

The self-proclaimed 'GWOAT' backed up her claims with a stunning points success in the capital, capping off an exciting night of fighting action that also saw Alycia Baumgardner dethrone Mikaela Mayer in their unified super-featherweight title showdown.

Meanwhile. Jake Paul remained unbeaten after six fights following his unanimous decision victory over former UFC champion Anderson Silva.

The 25-year-old has now won all of his professional bouts since making his debut against AnEsonGib in January 2020.

His victory against Silva was arguably Paul's toughest test but he came through it well.

Another highlight of the month came when Deontay Wilder returned to winning ways with a first-round knockout victory over Robert Helenius in New York.

Rugby League: Shocks at a premium

The Rugby League World Cup got underway in October and there have been plenty of big-scoring games to enjoy if not any surprising results.

The tournament is sure to move through the gears once the group stage is completed in early November and the knockout action gets under way.

Australia and New Zealand have been impressive as expected but the performance of the tournament so far was probably England’s in their 60-6 demolition of Samoa.
