Australian Football: Arnold wants more for Peru test

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold says his players will need to step it up a notch if they are to beat Peru and book their place in the World Cup finals.

Australia, who are priced at 500/1 to win the World Cup, took a step closer to qualification with a 2-1 win over the UAE on Tuesday, and now just the Peruvians stand in their way.

Big underdogs

It will be a tough ask against a Peru side that are ranked 22nd in the world, and Arnold admits they will need to raise their game to go through.

Arnold was obviously delighted with the win against the UAE but says there is much room for improvement when they take on Peru on Monday night.

“I was probably 50 per cent happy with our team,” Arnold told reporters after the win. “There’s a lot of improvement still.
“If I went into the dressing room and asked all the players, if they’ve got some percentage of improvement in them, I think all of them would say yes. So that’s what we need. We need them all to play a better game against Peru.”

Socceroos written off

Not many outside of the Socceroos camp give them a chance of beating Peru, but Arnold says that is just the way they like it and they will be out to prove the doubters wrong once again.

“We like people saying that we have no chance or we cannot achieve anything,” he added. “That’s what I’ve been driving into these boys and sometimes you don’t play well, but you can still win by fighting and running and chasing and being aggressive. That also can be a success.”
