WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood credits Ben Davison as being one of the best, if not the best, boxing coaches on the planet.
Overseeing the proud Nottingham fighter’s meteoric rise from a crushing domestic title defeat right the way through to world championship glory, Davison has played a hugely significant role in helping transform the in-ring career of the talented 126-pound campaigner.
Wood has made no secret of the fact that he wouldn’t have hit the professional heights he has without the guidance of his now esteemed trainer – one who also helped shape the fortunes of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
Over the years, Wood and Davison have formed a remarkably tight relationship, and whilst they both say they are as close personally as they are professionally, we thought we’d find out just how well the two really do know each other.
In the build-up to Wood’s world title showdown with Mauricio Lara, we paid the pair a visit at Davison’s training base in Essex and put a series of questions to them to help ascertain how close they really are.
We find out who has the best taste in music, who works the hardest, who is the better cook and who would make the best Prime Minister, amongst much more, and let’s just say that whilst it transpires they are clearly tightknit, it doesn’t mean they are always in full agreement!
