Our resident boxing expert Rob Tebbutt previews this weekend’s super-bout between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas and backs ‘Tank’ to dethrone ‘King Ry’ between ‘Rounds 7 - 12’.
What a night in Las Vegas as Gervonta Davis (2/5) and Ryan Garcia (2/1) get set to square-off in the early hours of Sunday morning in a heavily-hyped match-up between two of boxing’s biggest stars.
Gervonta Davis is an explosive puncher, a southpaw and boasts power in abundance, whereas Ryan Garcia possesses that whippy left hook and incredible hand-speed. In his own right, Ryan Garcia is one of the sport’s genuine superstars.
How do I see this fight going? well I certainly don’t see it going the distance!
I do however lean towards the more experienced fighter in Davis, who has had those wins over Jose Pedraza and Leo Santa Cruz, whereas in recent times Garcia has been relatively inactive.
He had to pick himself up off the canvas against a southpaw in Luke Campbell, who was throwing that overhand left in, and I fully expect Davis to look to do the exact same thing.
Garcia will be very dangerous early on in this fight though. He is exceptionally quick and has good power in both hands. Davis will need to weather that early storm, ease himself into it and then pick up the pace from the halfway point.
Eventually, I foresee him taking Garica out by stoppage between ‘Rounds 7 – 12’, which is priced up at 11/5.
There is also a case, and some value, in looking at Davis to prevail on points, especially if you are a fight fan who feels that Garcia can hang on in there and take ‘Tank’ to the judges’ cards for only the third time in his career.
Davis to win this fight ‘By Decision’ is available with bet365 at 9/2.
Garcia is telling everybody that he is going to win this fight by KO, and if you share that same belief then you can get a massive 15/4 on him doing so.
He’s a confident fighter and he really does believe that he is winning this bout. Not only does he feel he will win it, he is backing himself to win it early - he is saying that this fight is going to be easy for him, so again, if you think there is a chance that ‘King Ry’ does get Davis out of there early doors, then you can get a massive 16/1 that he gets the job done ‘Between Rounds 1 – 4’.
There's plenty of value to be found on this fight - depending on how you see it panning out - but for me, as I said previously, my bet is for Gervonta Davis to get the stoppage victory ‘Between Rounds 7 – 12’ at 11/5.
