Lionel Messi
Born in Rosario, Argentina in 1987, Lionel Messi is an Argentine professional footballer who is widely regarded as the greatest player in history. He is renowned for his prolific goal-scoring, creative playmaking, dribbling ability and vision, holding a record eight Ballon d'Or awards - the most for any player - and has winning numerous other individual honours.
During his 17-year career with Barcelona, he became the club's all-time leading scorer and helped them win 10 La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions Leagues and seven Copa del Rey trophies. He also holds the record for the most goals in La Liga history. After leaving Barcelona in 2021, he played for Paris Saint-Germain before joining Inter Miami in the MLS in 2023.
Internationally, Messi was instrumental in Argentina's victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he also won the Golden Ball award as the tournament's best player. He also led Argentina to win the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, alongside winning an Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games.
The most decorated player in the history of professional football, having won 47 team trophies throughout his career, Messi has set numerous records, including the most goals in a calendar year (91) and the most assists in international football.
