Youngest-ever Premier League starting XIs

We take a look at the youngest starting XIs ever fielded in a Premier League game.

Premier League

5. Arsenal v Sunderland - 22 years, 315 days (2008)

Arsenal arrived at the Stadium of Light on the final day of the season in third place having led the league with less than 10 games to play.

With no title to play for, Arsene Wenger named a heavily rotated squad.

A then-19-year-old Theo Walcott netted the only goal of the game in the 24th minute as the Gunners left with all three points.

4. Man Utd v Crystal Palace - 22 years, 284 days (2017)

Jose Mourinho was in a generous mood as he handed out four top-flight debuts to his United youngsters.

21-year-old Josh Harrop marked his league bow with the opening goal at Old Trafford before Paul Pogba got himself on the scoresheet.

Angel Gomes replaced Wayne Rooney with two minutes to play to become Manchester United's youngest-ever Premier League player and the first player born in the 2000s to appear in England's top-flight.

3. Man Utd v Brentford - 22 years, 270 days (2025)

With a Europa League semi-final second-leg on the horizon, Ruben Amorim named Manchester United's youngest-ever Premier League starting XI.

Mason Mount scored just his second United goal before Brentford hit four without reply in an eventual 4-3 win for the Bees.

Danish youth international Chido Obi became the club's most junior player to start a Premier League game.

2. Arsenal v Portsmouth - 22 years, 237 days (2009)

Arsene Wenger became the first manager in Premier League history to name two different starting XIs with an average age that is less than 23.

Inexperience didn't hinder his side though as they ran out 3-0 winners to secure a top-four spot for the following campaign.

Andrey Arshavin was named captain of a team that included Carlos Vela, Nicklas Bendtner and Aaron Ramsey.

1. Middlesbrough v Fulham - 20 years, 181 days (2006)

Ahead of their UEFA Cup final against Sevilla, Middlesbrough fielded a staggering seven teenagers for their Premier League clash with Fulham.

Steve McClaren handed an 18-year-old Lee Cattermole the armband, making him the club's youngest-ever captain in the process.

Fulham edged out a narrow contest through a late Heidar Helguson penalty but McClaren expressed his delight with the performance by his youngsters.

He said: "There were some heroic performances out there and the lads did Middlesbrough proud."
