Aussie Rules: Young guns step up for Lions

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan saluted the young guns in his Lions side following a narrow win over Greater Western Sydney and says they will be the key to their chances of success this season.

The Lions will again be pushing for grand final glory in 2022 and they are tracking well after picking up their ninth win of the campaign against the Giants.

Neale star of the show

Lachie Neale was the star of the show in the 14-point win, but some of the other more experienced players in Fagan’s side had an off-game.

Thankfully for the Lions, the youngsters stepped up with Jarrod Berry, Cam Rayner and Keidean Coleman all shining. So did Deven Robertson who was playing his first game of 2022.

Fagan praise for young guns

Fagan was delighted and says they will need more of the same if they are to go far this season.

"Jarrod Berry has been learning to play the wing all season and he's stuck at it and today there was some dividends for him," Fagan told reporters.

"I think he can become one of the really good wingmen in the League the way that he is developing.

"If we want to be any good this year, those young blokes that have been around for three to four years, they've got to step up and they have been this year.

"(Hugh) McCluggage has been very good, Berry was good today, (Zac) Bailey is having a good year, (Brandon) Starcevich is a really solid defender now, so we've just got to keep those blokes growing."
