Yorkshire Day: Famous athletes hailing from God's Own County

Across a myriad of sporting disciplines, Yorkshire has produced some of the country's finest athletes.

Indeed, at the 2012 Olympics, Yorkshire's contribution to the medal tally would have been enough to rank 12th amongst every country.

On Yorkshire Day, we look at some of the most famous athletes to come from the county.

Athletics

Alistair and Jonny Brownlee

It was so hard to separate the Brownlee brothers, Alistair and Jonny, that the pair seemed to come as a package deal.

While Alistair was born in Dewsbury and Jonny in Leeds, the pair attended Bradford Grammar School, going on to win a combined five Olympic medals in triathlon, including three golds.

Hannah Cockroft

One of Britain's most successful Paralympians, Halifax's Hannah Cockroft won at least two gold medals at each of the 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024 Games.

Jessica Ennis-Hill

One of Britain's greatest athletes, Jessica Ennis-Hill was born and raised in Sheffield, going on to win an Olympic gold and silver in heptathlon as well as three World Championship golds.

Boxing

Nicola Adams

Born and raised in Leeds, Nicola Adams shot to fame at the 2012 Olympics, becoming the first female to win an Olympic boxing medal, taking flyweight gold before doing the same four years later.

Kell Brook

One of Yorkshire's best, Kell Brook won his first 33 fights as a professional to beat Shawn Porter to the IBF welterweight title in California, defeating long-time rival Amir Khan in his final fight.

Luke Campbell

Another boxer who found fame at the 2012 Olympics, Hull's Luke Campbell took the bantamweight gold before turning professional, where he'd go on to fight the likes of Jorge Linares and Vasily Lomachenko for the lightweight world titles.

Naseem Hamed

One of Britain's most popular and successful boxers, 'Prince' Naseem Hamed was the WBO featherweight champion for nearly six years, amassing a 35-0 record before his stunning defeat to Marco Antonio Barrera.

Johnny Nelson

Another successful South Yorkshire fighter, Johnny Nelson won the WBO cruiserweight title in his 45th professional fight, going on to hold the belt for six years.

Cricket

Jonny Bairstow

Son of England cricketer David Bairstow, Jonny spent a decade as England's wicket keeper, successfully representing the country in all three formats of the game.

Geoffrey Boycott

While his playing style won him few fans, it's hard to deny Geoffrey Boycott's ability as an opening batter.

Representing England for nearly 20 years, Boycott scored 8,114 runs at an average of 47.72.

Harry Brook

Though still relatively early in his Test career, Harry Brook has established himself as one of the world's best batters, recording nine centuries in his first 29 Tests and averaging more than 50.

Len Hutton

Born in Pudsey in between Bradford and Leeds, Len Hutton averaged 56.67 over his career that was interrupted by the Second World War, and included a 364 against Australia in just his sixth Test match.

Joe Root

Currently second in the all-time Test run rankings, Joe Root will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest batters in the history of the game, and he may yet topple Sachin Tendulkar's record as the highest run-scorer in Test cricket.

Fred Trueman

Not just Yorkshire's, not just England's, but one of cricket's great fast bowlers, Fred Trueman was named in the ECB's all-time Test XI.

Hailing from the outskirts of Rotherham, Trueman represented England for 13 years, taking 307 wickets at 21.57.

Cycling

Ed Clancy

Part of Team GB's all-conquering team pursuit line-up, Barnsley-born Ed Clancy won Olympic gold in 2008, 2012 and 2016 to go along with his six World Championship golds.

Kadeena Cox

With it's rolling hills and open roads, it should be no surprise to see Yorkshire produce so many successful cyclists with Kadeena Cox up there with the best.

Leeds' Cox won gold, silver and bronze at the 2016 Paralympic Games in and has three World Championship golds to her name in athletics, winning four Paralympic golds in cycling.

Lizzie Deignan

Perhaps better known as Lizzie Armitstead, the Otley cyclist won Olympic silver in 2012 and has eight World Championship medals to her name.

Football

Gordon Banks

Born in Sheffield, Gordon Banks would be England's number one goalkeeper for the better part of a decade, winning the 1966 World Cup, and making one of football's greatest ever saves four years later against Pele.

Kevin Keegan

Born in Doncaster, Kevin Keegan would go on to become one of only four Englishmen to win the Ballon d'Or, and the only one to win it twice.

One of England's greatest-ever players, Keegan won three league titles and a European Cup with Liverpool before signing for Hamburg.

Erling Haaland

Yes, really! Although you won't see his donning a flat cap or adorning himself with a white rose, Erling Haaland was born in Leeds during his dad's playing career, moving to Norway as a three-year-old.

Unfortunately for England, Haaland opted to represent the nation where he grew up...

David Seaman

For about 40 years from 1963, there were only four goalkeepers that were ever England's number one: Gordon Banks, Ray Clemence, Peter Shilton and Rotherham's David Seaman.

Seaman made his name with Arsenal, becoming one of the country's finest stoppers, going on to win 75 caps.

Rugby

Sam Burgess

Making his name in rugby league, Dewsbury's Sam Burgess would establish himself as one of the code's best players, earning a move to Australia before making the brief switch to rugby union where he'd feature in the 2015 World Cup.

Jason Robinson

Leeds's Jason Robinson was gifted with electrifying pace and agility, making him a lethal winger for the Wigan Warriors before making the switch to rugby union, where he'd win the World Cup in 2003.

Jason Tindall

Born in Otley, Jason Tindall is perhaps better known for his life outside of sport having married a member of the royal family, but in sport, Tindall was a successful member of England's 2003 World Cup squad.
