The latest horse racing betting tips for Wednesday's card at York from the Racing Post's Keith Melrose.
13:50 York - Democracy Dilemma @ 10/1
15:00 York - King's Gambit @ 9/4
16:45 York - Miss Attitude @ 7/1
13:50 York - Democracy Dilemma @ 10/1
The Ebor meeting kicks off with the hardest betting race of any major festival. This 22-runner handicap has in-form and progressive runners from top to bottom and a wide array of strong form lines represented. It is just as well bet365 are offering six places each-way. Punters are likely to need it.
There used to be a bias towards low-drawn runners in these sorts of races, and the bulk of the pace today is on that side of the draw. With a couple of market principals drawn at the opposite end, this looks about as good a wedge as punters have to get a foothold in the race.
From stall three will break Democracy Dilemma, who is lightning-fast and has exactly the make-up of the sort of horse that does well at York. He was actually third in a Listed race here last time, setting the tempo for Starlust in the same colours to sweep to victory.
Before that, Democracy Dilemma showed real zip when finishing second in the Dash at Epsom, one of the fastest races on the calendar. Horses that get out quickly are often difficult to peg back on York's straight course, and while Democracy Dilemma is no certainty, if he gets off to his usual flying start, it is hard to see six going past him.
15:00 York - King's Gambit @ 9/4
The Great Voltigeur Stakes is a St Leger trial on the one hand, but also a long-term stop for horses that will contest the top middle-distance races next year. The likes of Irish Derby winner Los Angeles and Grand Prix de Paris second Illinois fit into the first category, whereas King's Gambit is from the second group, and they tend to be classier.
King's Gambit won a historically strong handicap at Newbury in May and has continued to progress since. He was second at Royal Ascot, but the conclusion from most observers was that he should have won. He then went up against older horses in the York Stakes here. He set a steady pace that turned the race into a sprint for home, and he just failed to hold off Alflaila, who runs in the Juddmonte International at 15:35.
King's Gambit continues to march towards Group 1s, and the Great Voltigeur Stakes is a staging post along the way. In a test of stamina, Los Angeles and Illinois would be a threat, but if there is an opportunity to use his pace, King's Gambit would deserve to be the favourite.
16:45 York - Miss Attitude @ 7/1
Life begins at the tail end of July for mid-ranking handicappers, especially sprinters. Goodwood combines with the Racing League, Shergar Cup, York and beyond to offer many opportunities to horses rated in the region of 85 to 100. Miss Attitude has peaked at the right time and can keep going that way.
This filly won at Haydock in June and has since been second at Doncaster, third in a Racing League fixture at Yarmouth and a nose second at Glorious Goodwood. She is quick and appeals as just the type to suit York.
Main rival Gutsy Girl is to be respected, although her revelatory win last time came at 6f on the all-weather. York over 5f will put a fresh demand on her, and although her form is more obviously moving upwards Miss Attitude has the credentials to pass this particular test.
