Jonny Clayton is slight favourite for the World Matchplay after beating previous favourite Luke Humphries inthe semi-final.
Michael van Gerwen's shock first round exit at the hands of Brendan Dolan had opened the door for the joint-favourites Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith to go the distance, but neither reached the last eight after following MvG through the trap door on Tuesday evening.
Price, despite notching a three-figure average, was beaten by an inspired Joe Cullen in a tense and dramatic tie-break, before Smith - the world number one - was dumped out of the competition by quarter-finalist Chris Dobey.
The tournament had seemingly opened up for Peter Wright, but he was knocked out by Ryan Searle on Wednesday evening, and Jonny Clayton and Nathan Aspinall will contest the final.
