The World Cup might be all about national pride but personal gain will also in the minds of a number of Premier League stars looking to put themselves in the shop window.

Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't need to remind anyone of what he can still offer, but the 37-year-old's recent outburst surely means the only way is out of Manchester United once he has finished leading Portugal this winter.

But who are the other Premier League aces hoping a World Cup to remember will engineer a dream club move on their return from the Middle East?

Ronaldo rant clears decks for post-World Cup exit

The Cristiano Ronaldo soap opera is surely nearing its inevitable conclusion after his destructive interview with Piers Morgan, which has to hasten the veteran forward's exit from Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag was apparently set to make the five-time Ballon d'Or winner available on a free in January anyway, but it's entirely possible he'll effectively be gone before then after his latest shock outburst.

Interestingly, of course, if you believe the reports there aren't any takers for Ronaldo. Or, at least, no clubs who can afford the wages or the risk.

But if Portugal's divisive superstar captain is focused on the job in hand rather than his own future over the next month, and lifts the World Cup on December 18, that would change the landscape over his post-January plans. 

And those big overseas clubs seeking the ultimate big-name signing would quickly shrug off the Ronaldo rap sheet if he can lead 14/1 Portugal to glory before Christmas.

Big names ready to showcase their talents

The same is true for plenty of other big stars who will hope to shine for their countries but have been the subject of transfer speculation already this autumn.

The Manchester City duo of Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, for example, are still regulars in arguably the best side in Europe but both have been linked with moves away from the Etihad. 

It's no secret that Barcelona fancy Silva, while Galatasaray are the latest club to say they'll take Germany's Gundogan straight after the finals.

Barcelona have apparently lost interest in Portugal's Ruben Neves, though Manchester United and Arsenal are sniffing around the Wolves midfielder.

The clamour to prize Declan Rice away from West Ham has never been stifled and a good World Cup for England, who are 8/1 to win the tournament, will only add boost his value.

If Harry Kane, who has attracted the attention of Bayern Munich, scores the goals that lead to either a Golden Boot and/or a World Cup winner's medal, that temptation to leave Tottenham will become hard to resist. 

Team-mate Eric Dier is another player who has said he would love to play abroad and top teams from the continent would no doubt perk up if the Spurs' centre-back has a month to remember.

Less-heralded stars hope to seize their chance

Seeing market interest heighten in the likes of Kane or Silva would surprise no-one given their undoubted star quality, but of more interest, perhaps, are the other unsettled Qatar-bound players whose stock could rise spectacularly on the back of a good finals.

James Maddison's talents are no secret but it won't be just Newcastle chasing him down if he can repeat on a global stage what he does for Leicester.

The same applies to Chelsea duo Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech of Germany and Morocco respectively, with Ziyech on Milan's wish-list and he has been pretty much told he can go in January.

And even further off the radar is someone like Matt Turner, the Arsenal 'keeper who can't get close to No.1 status at the Emirates but is just that with the United States, having seen off the challenge of Zack Steffen.

Ghana's Tariq Lamptey's star has waned after falling out of favour at Brighton, but the pacy right-back, such a hot ticket when he burst on to the scene, would love a chance to shine. 

The same goes for his international team-mate Mohammed Salisu, especially with his Southampton side in real trouble.

And what Facundo Pellistri wouldn't give for a few minutes for Uruguay, who are 50/1 shots to win the World Cup, to invite suitors after being told by Manchester United he can leave after barely figuring for the Red Devils.
