We take a look at the contenders to capture Olympic Gold in the women's football competition at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Four-time women's Olympic football champions USA have been installed as the narrow favourites to capture Gold in France this summer as attentions begin to turn towards Paris 2024.
The Stars and Stripes reigned supreme in each of the 1996, 2004, 2008 and 2012 editions but have only landed a solitary bronze since then, owing to a dramatic 4-3 triumph over Australia four years ago in the 3rd/4th place playoff.
However, on the back of their recent Gold Cup success, together with the recent managerial appointment of former Chelsea boss, and serial winner, Emma Hayes, optimism is rife that the US can re-establish themselves as the dominant force within the female code.
World Champions Spain appear to offer the biggest threat to Hayes' troops though, with Montserrat Tomé's side heading to Paris in sublime form having won 22 of their last 24 fixtures, including a 1-0 World Cup final triumph over England last year.
Host nation France will also be eyeing up success on home spoil after displaying significant signs of improvement in the aftermath of their disappointing quarter-final elimination in 2020, whilst Japan, who inflicted a remarkable 4-0 defeat upon Spain last year, will carry plenty of betting appeal.
Australia agonisingly missed out on a medal in Tokyo, and despite the absence of the influential Sam Kerr this summer, there is plenty of reason for optimism within the Socceroo's camp of at least replicating their semi-final run four years ago.
