There are three meetings in Britain on Tuesday, with two afternoon jumps fixtures at Catterick and Wincanton and one on the all-weather at Newcastle, which goes on into the evening.
14:45 Wincanton - King Arise @ 10/3
15:15 Wincanton - Phoenix Risen @ 5/1
18:00 Newcastle - Paddy’s Day @ 6/1
14:45 Wincanton - King Arise @ 10/3
There aren’t many better at improving horses through the ranks than Richard Newland and he appears to have a chance in the 2m4f handicap chase (14:45) at Wincanton with King Arise, who he trains in partnership with Jamie Insole.
The seven-year-old can build on a promising start over fences. King Arise was formerly trained by Newland outright and has steadily progressed with racing, producing a career-best effort when beaten just a neck on his chasing debut at Ayr last month.
That was his first outing since May 2023 and he almost defied the 532-day absence, when only narrowly failing to peg back winner Pats Dream a rival that has franked the form by winning since.
The selection has gone up 5lb in the weights for that near-miss, but is open to plenty of further improvement over fences and should come on for that first run in so long.
He was a winner of his sole point-to-point and now looks capable of breaking his maiden under rules after another shorter break.
15:15 Wincanton - Phoenix Risen @ 5/1
The 1m7f handicap hurdle (15:15) at Wincanton looks like a good opportunity for Phoenix Risen, who returned from a break to finish second to the reopposing American Land at Taunton last month and can reverse those places with that run under his belt.
He is certainly entitled to improve for the outing. Phoenix Risen also has a significant pull in the weights with American Land.
He is 7lb better off and rider Gearoid Harney is now able to claim his full 7lb, rather than the 3lb that he took off the selection’s back last time. That means Phoenix Risen is, in effect, on 11lb better terms now.
He has been inconsistent in the past and needs to prove he can build on that run, but did put together back-to-back wins at Taunton in 2023 and that gives hope he can follow his last effort up with another good one.
Provided he can, Phoenix Risen might have too much for these rivals off a light weight.
18:00 Newcastle - Paddy’s Day @ 6/1
It’s off to Newcastle’s evening all-weather meeting for my final selection because Paddy’s Day looks to have strong claims in the 5f handicap (18:00) for Nigel Tinkler and useful 5lb claimer Alex Jary.
Paddy’s Day is a course-and-distance winner, who has form figures reading 142 at the track, and he has been running consistently well away from this venue of late, so may be ready to strike back here.
The Nigel Tinkler-trained four-year-old has two seconds and a third from his last three starts on Tapeta at Southwell and was beaten only a neck at that track last time in a race from which the fourth has won since.
Paddy’s Day did all of his best work at the line and shaped like he needs a stiffer test. He gets that here because Newcastle often places the emphasis on stamina and he is nicely drawn in the middle in stall four.
A 2lb rise in the weights may not be enough to stop him going one better.
