Will England get a bank holiday if Three Lions win the World Cup?

England will make their first World Cup semi-final appearance in 36 years when they take on Argentina on Wednesday.

The Three Lions have the country dreaming of a second World Cup triumph after coming from behind to eliminate Norway in the quarter-finals and reach the last four of the competition for only the fourth time in the nation's history.

Finishing top of Group L, Thomas Tuchel's side endured a major fright in their last-32 clash against DR Congo before a quickfire brace from Harry Kane saw them prevail. England then demonstrated the resilience of champions against Mexico in the Round of 16 as they conquered the altitude and the partisan Estadio Azteca to progress.

England's tumultuous path to the semi-finals was epitomised by their comeback win over Norway as two goals from Jude Bellingham spared their blushes and booked their passage to the last four.

Old foes Argentina await them in Atlanta, and if England prevail they will face Spain in the final in New Jersey; a repeat of the European Championship final two years ago.

Should England go on to achieve a second World Cup crown, will we get a bank holiday? Find out more below.

Will there be an extra bank holiday if England win the World Cup?

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer teased the idea of an extra bank holiday following England's memorable triumph over Mexico.

Speaking at a NATO conference, Starmer said: “I don’t want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final.”

With the final taking place on Sunday 19th July, if England do win the World Cup, then it's expected Friday 24th July will be the most likely date for a celebratory bank holiday.

It's currently unclear whether the extra bank holiday will be applicable to just England or the whole of the United Kingdom. Scotland have already enjoyed an extra bank holiday this year on Monday 15th June after qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.
