bet365's Sports and Trading expert Steve Freeth said: "Many have tried and failed to reach the heights of Sir Alex Ferguson since his departure and our prices highlight how much work we think Amorim has to do in the short term.
"However, this appointment feels like a step in the right direction and it might take time, just like it did for Sir Alex."
After Sir Matt Busby left his role as Manchester United manager, the club went through five successors before finding Sir Alex Ferguson, and there are plenty of parallels between the club in 1986 and 2024.
After a long spell of dominance, the departure of a legendary manager culminated in years of declining standards on the pitch with the club's biggest rivals overtaking them, and despite occasional cup successes, a league title has remained out of sight.
Amorim's first task is close the gap on the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. Since Ferguson's retirement in 2013, City have won 16 major trophies including seven titles and the UEFA Champions League. Liverpool even ended their title drought and added a sixth European title to their collection. Arsenal, too, 20 years after their 'Invincible' season are putting distance between themselves and the chasing pack.
As with Liverpool before Jurgen Klopp and Arsenal before MIkel Arteta, it remains hard to visualise a Manchester United captain hoisting aloft the Premier League trophy once again. Indeed, Arsenal are still waiting, but the club have taken great strides and are as close as they've been in two decades.
If new head coach Amorim has one thing in his favour, it's that the landscape looks much friendlier than it has for all of his predecessors.
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City look more vulnerable than ever and there's talk that Guardiola may actually leave at the end of the season; Liverpool are in their post-Klopp transition - though Arne Slot has started remarkably well - and even Arsenal have found themselves well off the pace so far this term.
Amorim brought a Portuguese giant to a first title in 19 years and that is what he'll be judged on at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old has proven himself in a smaller league - though the same could be said of the man he's replacing - and he'll need to quickly adapt to the rigours of the English game and re-establish United as a footballing force.
United fans will desperately hope that Amorim is successful enough to warrant an extension to his initial contract, which runs to the end of the 2026/27 season, though the club are as short as 1/10 not to win a title in that time.
Amorim is the sixth manager to have taken permanent charge of Manchester United since Ferguson's departure.
The sixth manager to have taken over United following Busby's departure? Sir Alex Ferguson himself.
