Which teams have never won the County Championship?

The 2026 County Championship is going right down to the wire with three teams still hopeful of claiming the title.

Going into the penultimate round of fixtures, just five points split Somerset, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire at the top of the table, though Somerset's struggles at Yorkshire could well see them drop vital points.

Despite their struggles over the last decade, and only three titles since 1968, Yorkshire remain the most successful team in County Championship history, with 33 titles, 10 clear of next best Surrey, who themselves are 10 clear of Middlesex.

Of the 18 counties playing in the County Championship, only three remain without a title: Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire and Somerset.

Somerset, who have six runner-up finishes to their name in the 21st century, were in pole position in the closing stages of the County Championship season but threaten to surrender their advantage with their wait potentially going on for another 12 months.

Northamptonshire haven't got quite as close as Somerset in recent years, with the more recent of their four runner-up finishes in the County Championship coming 50 years ago, back in 1976. It's a similar tale for Gloucestershire, whose last runner-up finish came 40 years ago in 1986, their sixth in total.
