Which players have been relegated from the Premier League the most times?

A sport which can often promise glorious highs, football is also capable of inflicting sobering lows.

As thrilling as races for titles can be, there is another side to football in which teams are forced to battle to avoid relegation.

We take a look through the archives at the players who have suffered the ignominy of relegation from the Premier League on the most occasions.

Players relegated from the Premier League the most times

• Hermann Hreidarsson

5 relegations (1997/98, 1999/00, 2001/02, 2006/07, 2009/10)

Former Iceland international defender Hermann Hreidarsson is one of only two players to have been relegated from the Premier League on five separate occasions.

A versatile defender capable of playing at full-back or centre-back, Hreidarsson suffered relegation at every Premier League club he represented during his career - Crystal Palace, Wimbledon, Ipswich Town, Charlton and Portsmouth.

This unwanted record can be partly explained by Hreidarsson's commendable longevity as a Premier League player, making a total of 332 Premier League appearances across 11 seasons.

An aggressive, full-blooded operator, Hreidarsson received 89 international caps for Iceland and captained his country towards the end of his career.

• Nathan Blake

5 relegations (1993/94, 1995/96, 1997/98, 1998/99, 2003/04)

Welshman Nathan Blake is the other player to share the record for most Premier League relegations alongside Hreidarsson with five.

First suffering the dreaded drop with Sheffield United in 1995, Blake went on to be relegated twice with Bolton in 1996 and 1998, followed by further relegations on the books of Blackburn in 1999 and Wolves in 2004.

Alongside the humiliation of relegation from the Premier League, Blake was able to rejoice in three Championship promotion campaigns during his career in 1996/97, 2000/01 and 2002/03.

A forward with clever movement inside the box, Blake made 30 international appearances for Wales between 1994 and 2003 - scoring four goals.

Since his retirement, Blake has gone on to work in punditry and in 2014 was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at Film Fest Cymru following his role in a short film called The Homing Bird.
