Which Inter players could win the Ballon d'Or?

Only two players have ever lifted the Ballon d'Or whilst playing for Inter, but a chance to end the season with three trophies has made the prospect of a third winner a real possibility.

Lothar Matthäus was the first Nerazzurri player to win football's most prestigious individual award when he scooped the 1990 edition.

The Germany international won the UEFA Cup as well as captaining his country to their third World Cup triumph at Italia 90'.

Them, just seven years later, Ronaldo Nazario captured the first of his two Ballon d'Or wins.

At just 21 years old, he became the youngest recipient of the award after signing from Barcelona the previous summer.

Ronaldo had netted 34 times in La Liga before scoring in eight of his first 11 Inter games.

Ballon d'Or

Which Inter players could win the 2025 Ballon d'Or?

Lautaro Martinez

Inter's captain and top goalscorer - 'El Toro' is certain to be in the mix should Inter prevail in the UEFA Champions League.

Not just prolific in front of goal, Martinez embodies everything that a modern forward should be; his work rate and combination play makes him absolutely pivotal to the way his team play.

His partnership with Marcus Thuram is likely to be crucial should Inter prevail against Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the month and if Martinez plays a hand in the decisive goal, the Ballon d'Or could well be his.

Alessandro Bastoni

Entering the prime years of his career, there is a thought that Alessandro Bastoni could become Italy's next great defender.

Making the move from Atalanta in 2017, former manager Gian Piero Gasperini was impressed from an early age.

He said: "His understanding of the game and ability to read situations is exceptional for someone his age. We always knew he was destined for great things."

Bastoni is now fulfilling his potential and is widely considered to be one of the best defenders in the world.

Inter conceded just one goal throughout the entire League Phase of this season's UEFA Champions League and have the third-best defensive record in Serie A.

With their defence contributing immensely to their success, don't be surprised if the votes start to come for their best defender.

Yann Sommer

Standout moments often stick in the mind of voters and, whilst a goalkeeper hasn't won this award since 1963, you can envisage a situation where Yann Sommer puts his name in the hat as a potential winner.

Whilst the focus will be on Gianluigi Donnarumma should the Champions League final be decided by penalties, Yann Sommer has an equal chance of being the hero for his club.

The Swiss shot-stopper was outstanding both home and away against Barcelona in the semi-finals, making 14 saves across both legs.

Sommer has long been an underappreciated goalkeeper but 2025 could be the year where he earns the recognition that his ability warrants.
