Miguel Almiron became the first player to be sent off under new rules preventing players from covering their mouths during a game at the 2026 World Cup.
The former Newcastle United man was dismissed shortly before half-time with Paraguay leading Turkey 1-0 in San Francisco.
The 32-year-old covered his mouth with his hand while speaking to opponent Mert Muldur, who then informed the official standing next to him.
After the incident was checked by VAR, referee Ivan Barton confirmed to the crowd that he was sending Almiron off.
Fortunately for the winger, his Paraguay side held on to their 1-0 lead to secure a first success at the 2026 World Cup and keep their hopes of reaching the last 32 alive.
Ahead of this summer's tournament, it was confirmed that any player who uses their hand, arm, or jersey to deliberately cover their mouth during a confrontation with an opponent will be issued with an immediate red card.
In April 2026, IGAB approved the new ruling in an attempt to conceal discriminatory behaviour and prevent abuse of referees and officials.
A red card for a player covering their mouth either by the referee directly or the incident can be checked by VAR, like it was during the Group D fixture between Turkey and Paraguay.
