Bournemouth defeated AC Milan 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night in one of the most historic wins in the club’s history.
Seeing West Ham clinch their first trophy in 43 years in 2022/23, Newcastle end their 70-year wait for a trophy in 2024/25 and Crystal Palace win their first major honour in the form of the FA Cup is enough motivation for any club to get their hands on some silverware, and Bournemouth will hope that it’s their turn this campaign.
It’s been an undoubtedly tough start for Marco Rose since succeeding Andoni Iraola at the Vitality Stadium, but their six-point tally after seven games in the Premier League isn’t a reflection of how they’ve been playing, competitive in every game and finally earning their first three points against Sunderland at the weekend.
In the Europa League, however, they have reaped the benefits of three impressive performances, clinching maximum points from games against Real Sociedad, Sturm Graz and AC Milan.
Following their 3-0 victory over Milan at the Vitality Stadium, the Cherries are priced at 6/1 to win the Europa League.
The fixture alone was beyond Cherries supporters' wildest dreams given that they were in the third tier of English football just 13 years ago, and so to beat the seven-time UEFA Champions League winners in such convincing fashion is even more remarkable.
Justin Kluivert scored a penalty inside eight minutes to give Bournemouth the lead, and the referee pointed to the spot for a second time when Milan stopper Mike Maignan blatantly pushed Tyler Adams in the face, resulting in a red card for the Frenchman.
Marcus Tavernier was given the responsibility from 12 yards out this time round, and he converted expertly to double the host’s lead.
Milan had learnt their lesson and didn’t give up a third penalty in the second half, but they did concede a free kick in a dangerous position – which Amine Adli would superbly fire over the wall and into the top-left corner, extending Bournemouth’s advantage to three goals.
Of course, there is a long way to go before Bournemouth supporters think about booking their flights to Frankfurt – let alone lifting the Europa League trophy – but they are one of just five times to win all three games and only trail Bayer Leverkusen and Benfica in the betting.
