England's incredible 6-4 victory over France in the third-place playoff on Saturday has secured its place in World Cup history.
The 10-goal thriller is now among the highest-scoring matches ever played in the tournament and set a new record for a third-place play-off.
The all-time record still belongs to the quarter-final clash between Austria and Switzerland at the 1954 World Cup. In a match played in intense heat in Lausanne, the Swiss hosts raced to a 3-0 lead within the first 20 minutes, only to be on the receiving end of a stunning comeback. Austria ultimately won 7-5, with a total of 12 goals remaining unmatched in the tournament's history.
Just behind that are two matches tied with 11 goals each. The first is the legendary 6-5 victory for Brazil over Poland in the 1938 last 16. Decided in extra time, the game featured four goals from Leônidas da Silva and is remembered as one of the greatest matches in the history of the Brazilian national team.
The other 11-goal game was Hungary's 10-1 demolition of El Salvador during the group stage of the 1982 World Cup. Besides matching the goal tally, the game also holds the record for the largest margin of victory ever seen in the tournament.
With 10 goals, England 6-4 France at the 2026 World Cup now sits fourth on the all-time list. It was the first World Cup game to feature 10 or more goals since 1982 and became the highest-scoring third-place playoff in history.
