Australian Football: Western still in title fight

Western United are still in with a shout of claiming the premiers plate and boss John Aloisi says his players should be proud of their efforts this season.

Western are priced at 12/1 to win the minor premiership, but they will need to win in Adelaide on Sunday and hope that other results go their way.

More dropped points

Western are lucky to still be in with a shout after drawing 1-1 with the Newcastle Jets on Wednesday night. Luckily for them Melbourne City suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against Perth on the same night.

Melbourne City remain top of the ladder one point ahead of both Western and Melbourne Victory, who are in second on goal-difference.

Speaking to the media after the draw with the Jets Aloisi knew that Melbourne City were losing 1-0  but was still unsure how that game would finish.

Whatever the outcome he said his disappointed players should not beat themselves up over the results against the Jets.

Aloisi proud

“I want them to be proud of first of all what we've achieved so far in terms of putting ourselves in at least this position, and also the performance from tonight,” he told reporters. "There's a lot of football to be played. Whether we are fighting for the premiers plate next week or not, that's out of our hands now.

"But if we are we'll give it everything and if not, we least go into finals knowing that we can go anywhere, whether that's at home in Melbourne or away and still put on a performance and get results."
