Werder Bremen target Sheffield Wednesday's Danny Rohl to fill managerial vacancy

Werder Bremen are believed to have earmarked Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl in their search for a new manager.

After leading Werder Bremen to an eighth-placed finish in the Bundesliga, coach OIe Werner was relieved of his duties following his refusal to sign a new contact at the club.

The likes of Clemens Fritz, Horst Steffen and Lukas Kwasniok have all been linked with a move to Bremen but according to Bild, Sheffield Wednesday's Rohl could also now be a major candidate.

Rohl had previously been touted as the potential Southampton manager before the club opted for Will Still and he is rated as one of the brightest young coaches in Europe.

He led the club to a 12th placed finish in the Championship season but their play-off push dwindled following a poor run of form heading into the spring.

However, it is reported that his relationship with Dejphon Chansiri has deteriorated in recent times and it is widely expected that he will move on this summer.

Rohl himself has made no secret of his ambitions going forward and his quotes when speaking to RB Live, an RB Leipzig media outlet, have also disappointed Wednesday's supporters.

When asked about his future plans, Rohl said: “I always want to work with the best players and compete with the best coaches.

"The Bundesliga is, of course, a top choice. After all, I grew up with the Bundesliga. But the Premier League is also a dream. I’m currently very excited to see what happens this summer.”

Sheffield Wednesday's hierarchy are looking to plan for next season and they will want to provide clarity to supporters on the ongoing managerial uncertainty.

The likes of Dave Challinor, Rob Edwards and Gary O'Neil have been mouted as potential contenders to be the next Sheffield Wednesday manager and the doubts surrounding Rohl's future will need to be addressed in the coming days.
