Nathan Heaney v Brad Pauls (British middleweight title)

Nathan Heaney - By Decision or Technical Decision @ 4/7

Nathan Heaney has developed into a very capable fighter over the years and proved a lot of people - myself included - wrong with how he dealt with Denzel Bentley. It was a performance of guts, concentration and talent.

I expect Pauls to perform better than he did in his underwhelming English title challenge against now-European champion Tyler Denny back in February 2023, but he’s up against it on Saturday night and must start well if he’s going to rip the title away from the home-favourite.

Pauls does carry decent power and Heaney hasn’t been the hardest to hit throughout his career, so the Stoke-man will have to be wary early on in particular, but I’m backing his size and length to keep Pauls at bay en-route to a clear-but-competitive decision victory.

Liam Davies v Erik Robles Ayala (IBO super-bantamweight title)

Fight to go the Distance @ 5/6

Super-bantamweight contender Liam Davies continues his march towards world honours this weekend, taking on dangerous Mexican Erik Robles Ayala for the IBO ‘world’ title.

Davies has impressed at every stage of his professional career this far, showing poise, skill and underrated punching power in compiling an unblemished 15-0 record.

However, Ayala has beaten six previously-undefeated fighters, including a shock unanimous decision win over Scotland’s Lee McGregor in July 2023. In short, this is, at the very least, another good test for Davies and has the potential to be something of a banana skin for the Shropshire sharpshooter.

I think Davies’ control of distance and patient approach will see him safely navigate the full 12 rounds and pick up a decision victory, but to hedge my bets with this acca, I'm going with the fight to last the full distance.

Joe Joyce v Kash Ali (Heavyweight bout)

Joe Joyce - By KO, TKO or Disqualification & Over 3.5 Rounds @ 6/4

After being ruthlessly taken apart in consecutive bouts by Chinese puncher Zhilei Zhang - including a lights-out, one-punch KO in the rematch - another slip-up for Joe Joyce this weekend would surely signal the end of his career at the top level

In the other corner on Saturday night is Kash Ali, a heavyweight most-known for biting David Price in an ill-tempered DQ loss back in March 2019 and, with respect, a notable step-down in opposition for Joyce.

I expect Joyce, having been dealt with so ruthlessly twice by Zhang, to perhaps be somewhat wary early on and, coupled with Ali’s negativity, I feel this will crawl into the middle rounds before we see Joyce grind a tiring Ali down in the middle rounds to win by stoppage.

William Zepeda v Maxi Hughes (Lightweight bout)

William Zepeda - Between Rounds 7 - 12 @ 10/11

Unbeaten lightweight contender William Zepeda looks to stake his claim for a world title shot in the early hours of Sunday morning, as he takes on Doncaster-native Maxi Hughes over 12 rounds in Las Vegas.

Zepeda, who boats an impressive 29-0 (25 KOs) has established himself as a key player in the red-hot 135lbs division with wins over Rene Alvarado, JoJo Diaz and, most recently, Mercito Gesta in September 2023.

I feel that this is a fight that may start cagey, but eventually the activity of Zepeda will increase and it will be up to Hughes to match him for as long as he can.

While tough as ol’ boots and astute defensively, I would be surprised to see Hughes last the distance and as the final selection in my weekend acca, I will be backing Zepeda to get the job done somewhere in the second half of the fight.
