Wednesday's Ligue 1 preview: Lionel Messi back for PSG against struggling Angers

There's a full fixture list in Ligue 1 on Wednesday as the French top-flight resumes following a weekend off for the Coupe de France.

Lens will be looking to close the gap on Paris Saint-Germain when they head to Strasbourg at 20:00, and hope for an unlikely favour from bottom-side Angers.

Before that, inconsistent Lyon will be aiming to boost their European hopes when they head to Nantes and, as ever, all the Ligue 1 action will be available as part of bet365’s European Soccer Live Streaming Highlights.

There were high hopes that Lyon could push for the Ligue 1 title this season following a shrewd summer in the market but, as has so often been the case, they have struggled to put a consistent run together.

They currently sit eighth in the table, nine points shy of the European places and started 2023 with a 1-0 home defeat to Clermont.

Les Gones head west to face Nantes on Wednesday to take on a side sat 15th in the table and fresh from a 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Auxerre and a 2-0 Coupe de France success at Vire.

Lyon also won in the Coupe, 2-1 at home to Metz, and have won two of their last three away games in the league.

Both of those victories have seen both teams score and Lyon and ‘Yes’ in the Result/Both Teams to Score is 10/3.

If they are to win on Wednesday, one of those summer arrivals, Alexandre Lacazette, will be handy to have. The striker has scored six goals in his last seven games but will not have it all his own way against Les Canaris, who have lost just one of their last six in Ligue 1.

Nantes are now 15th and in the top half regarding home form. They are likely to give us as good as they get and a score draw might be in the offing at 10/3 in the Result/Both Teams to Score market, while Over 3.5 Goals is a tempting 11/5.

A much-changed PSG side got the job done in the Coupe de France by beating Chateauroux 3-1 on Friday but need to respond in the league after losing their last game 3-1 at Lens on New Year’s Day.

That was their first loss of the season in all competitions but, despite the defeat, they still sit four points clear of Les Sang et Or, who head to Strasbourg on Wednesday, at the top of the table.

Christophe Galtier’s side are also expected to be boosted by Lionel Messi’s return following his inspirational role in Argentina’s Qatar World Cup success.

Messi is 8/13 as an Anytime Goalscorer and will look to net against a rare side he has never scored against.

Angers sit bottom of Ligue 1 and have lost their last nine league matches. A penalty shootout win at Strasbourg in the Coupe may have boosted morale but they have never beaten PSG.

Les Parisiens scraped to a 2-1 win the last time these two met at the Parc des Princes, the same scoreline that they defeated Strasbourg by in their last home match.

A repeat of that Correct Score is 11/1 but it might be a bit more exciting, especially with Messi back in town and the worst defence in Ligue 1 the opposition.

PSG are 11/10 for Over 3.5 in Team Total Goals, while they are 7/4 To Score a Penalty, having done so in two of their last three home matches.

Lens look to close the gap

Any slip-ups by PSG are likely to be punished by Lens who head to managerless Strasbourg. These two teams are at opposite ends of the table, with Racing 19th and Lens, of course, second.

Strasbourg have won just once this season, but have drawn eight times, and sacked Julian Stephan on the back of their Coupe defeat to Angers.

In contrast, Lens were 2-0 winners at National 3 Linas-Montlhery and have continued their upward trajectory this season.

With just one defeat all season, they look the real deal in their bid for a second Ligue 1 title and are 20/1 To Win Outright.

They have also kept clean sheets in three of their last five away matches in Ligue 1 and are 5/2 to win to nil in the Result/Both Teams to Score market.

Their success this season has been built on having the best defence in the division and it would be no surprise to see them dominate again in the Grand Est.
