Virat Kohli's top five greatest Test innings

Virat Kohli has brought the curtain down on an illustrious Test career that spanned 14 years, 123 Tests and a total of 9,230 runs scored.

The former India captain will be hailed as one of the all-time greats, and we've looked back on his incredible career to pick out five of his best Test match innings.

141 (v Australia) - Adelaide, 2014

Deputising in the absence of MS Dhoni, Kohli skippered India for the first time and led by example against Australia in Adelaide.

Registering his first ton Down Under in the first innings, Kohli responded to Australia's confident of declaration 364 by swatting aside the quartet of Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon to reach a marvellous 141.

Even against an awkward bounce which Lyon looked to capitalise on, Kohli was striking at a rate of over 80 and hauled India to within 60 runs of victory, only for them to collapse following his dismissal and lose by 48.

235 (v England) - Mumbai, 2016

Kohli recorded seven double-hundreds in his Test career but his 235 against England at the Wankhede Stadium was without doubt one of his finest.

In unforgiving spin conditions, Kohli found his groove at the crease with a series of divine leg-side whips and marched India to an unsurmountable total as they triumphed by an innings and 36 runs.

Kohli found the boundary 25 times during his impressive innings before he was caught by James Anderson in deep extra cover. It was relief for England, but by that stage Kohli had drained all of the energy from them.

149 (v England) - Edgbaston, 2018

One trait India will no longer be able to depend on in the aftermath of Kohli's retirement is his ability to single-handedly carve out a ridiculous score to keep his team in the match.

Despite no other India player scoring more than 26 in the first innings, Kohli managed to produced a spectacular 149 to chalk up his first Test century in England and exorcise the demons of his forgettable 2014 tour.

What made his knock even more impressive was that Kohli had to contend with the partisan Edgbaston crowd and the relentlessness of Anderson, who tested Kohli's defensive skillset to the extreme.

There was a slice of fortune as Dawid Malan fluffed his catch at second slip early in the innings, but Kohli took full advantage of his reprieve; even if his efforts were in vain as India fell to a 31-run defeat.

119 (v South Africa) - Johannesburg, 2013

in similar circumstances to the aforementioned Birmingham Test, Kohli was forced to bear the strain of India's underwhelming batting order as he tallied 119 of the visitors' 280 runs to provide a first-innings lead.

South Africa were the number one ranked Test team at the time and the merciless attack of Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander could not get the better of Kohli in seaming conditions.

A calculated and efficient innings, the India star proceeded to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the Proteas spinners. While it was not enough for victory, Kohli's endeavour ensured they departed Johannesburg with a respectable draw.

123 (v Australia) - Perth, 2018

India were ultimately outclassed in this contest but were it not for the magnificence of Kohli, the nature of the defeat could have been extremely humiliating.

Kohli actually hailed this knock as the greatest he'd ever produced in a Test match and it's not hard to see why on a vicious wicket which demanded the utmost precision and concentration.

The India captain had quite simply let his bat do the talking, as he gestured by pointing to his bat and waving it upon reaching his century with a superb drive off a venomous Mitchell Starc delivery.

His sixth hundred in Australia, Kohli's haul saw him eclipse Sachin Tendulkar as the second fastest batter to achieve 25 Test hundreds.
