Despite his large number of YouTube subscribers and his association with KSI and AnEsonGIB, do not mistake Viddal Riley as a crossover boxer: he is a fighter first and an influencer second.

‘RIL’ started boxing at six years old and won silver at the 2013 European Junior Championships. He finished his amateur career with a 41-8 record, including wins over Chris Billam-Smith and Daniel Dubois.

The Londoner’s big break came when he accompanied KSI to Floyd Mayweather’s gym, while still in the unpaid ranks.

Riley was thrown in to spar, former IBF cruiserweight challenger, Andrew Tabiti. The Englishman impressed so much that he signed a deal with Jeff Mayweather.

Having fought in Mexico and on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao against Adrien Broner, Riley joined Ben Shalom’s BOXXER promotional outfit in 2022.

Back in Britain, the 26-year-old has shone while being showcased on Sky Sports.

Speed, power and accuracy have been hallmarks of Riley’s success so far, but will he look as accomplished as he faces the first real test of his career?

Boxing is a fickle business!

Not long ago, BOXXER and Sky Sports had high hopes for Mikael Lawal. The promoter and broadcaster were leading the Londoner towards a world title shot, but an upset defeat to Isaac Chamberlain put paid to those plans.

Now, it is Riley who is being fast-tracked, but as Lawal discovered, every underdog has their day.

The former British champion certainly has a shot, his rival is inexperienced and ‘Lethal’ has the power to back up his moniker.

Against Chamberlain, the 28-year-old patiently waited for a shot that never came, he cannot afford to make the same mistake twice.

Riley has looked the part so far, but it is up to Lawal to utilise his great experience to put his opponent under pressure.

It will be a long road back to contention for Lawal if he is to lose here, it remains to be seen whether the precarity of his position galvanises his resolve or causes him to crumble.
