Australian Football: Victory have come a long way says Popa

Melbourne Victory boss Tony Popovic says the fightback against Western United shows how far his side have progressed in a short space of time.

Victory are priced at 9/2 to win the A-League grand final this season and the point they earned in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night could turn out to be crucial.

Late strike

Victory were trailing 1-0 after Nikolai Topor-Stanley put Western in front on 47 minutes and Popovic believes last season his side would have gone on to lose the game.

But since he took charge they are a different side and showed it as Brendan Hamill fired home the equaliser in the 85th minute.

Popovic relishing tough run

Brillante frustrated as Victory held

"We had to forget that (conceding after half-time) quickly and maybe it shows how far the team has come or the club," Victory coach Tony Popovic said.

"That just shows you how far they've come. You can see there is a lot of belief in the group. Maybe last year that's a game we as a club lose and maybe lose it well, lose it comfortably."

Broxham praised

Meanwhile Popovic also hailed Leigh Broxham, who made his 350th A-League appearance when entered the fray in the 78th minute.

"I've always watched him from afar and in seeing him play all the various positions on the field and always do a good job for Melbourne Victory," he added. "Now, I've got the opportunity to coach him.

"It's a credit to himself and his family and also a credit to the football club to have him here for so long and hopefully he will be here for a very long time in whatever capacity that is."
