Australian Football: Veart talks up Mariners showdown

Adelaide United boss Carl Veart says it is crucial his side get a positive result against Central Coast Mariners as the race for finals football hots up.

Adelaide are out to finish in the top six this season and currently sit in third place on the ladder. However the teams around them do have games in hand.

Race for Finals

The Mariners are down in ninth spot, nine points behind the Reds, but they do have three games in hand.

It could get very tight indeed over the remaining games of the season and Veart has identified the clash against Central Coast as a big one.

Veart even thinks the game could be season-defining.

"This is a game that could set our season up because there's a lot of teams chasing us and Central Coast are one of those teams," he said.

Meanwhile Veart has yet to make a decision on whether star forward Craig Goodwin will figure in the game.

Goodwin is currently back in Adelaide but could make the trip to Gosford on Saturday morning and take his place in the side.

“ It's not too much. Sydney's only a two-hour flight, then an hour in the car up to Gosford,” Veart added. “It's not ideal but it can be done.”

Mariners still hurting

Adelaide beat Central Coast 2-1 last month courtesy of a winning goal in the 92nd minute and Mariners coach Nick Montgomery says the result still stings.

"It's still a little bit raw," Montgomery said. "That game, we deserved to win the game. We went 1-0 up. We had numerous opportunities to kill the game off and we copped two scrappy set pieces.

"We've learned and moved on from that."
