United States Copa America Odds: Berhalter's Boys 12/1 to win trophy on home soil

As the United States gears up to host the prestigious Copa America tournament, Gregg Berhalter's squad finds themselves 12/1 shots to claim the coveted trophy on home soil.

This highly anticipated event serves as a crucial audition for the Stars and Stripes ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which the USA will co-host alongside Canada and Mexico.

Home World Cup Audition

The 2024 Copa America presents the United States with an invaluable opportunity to test themselves against high-quality opposition, while playing on the big stage can serve as a useful dress rehearsal for the bigger global tournament down the line.

This is an important staging post for Berhalter two years out from the 2026 World Cup and some big decisions will need to be taken by those at the top of the federation if his team does not perform.

And while it will be a make-or-break moment for the coach, the players will also be looking to cement their places in the national setup with the World Cup on the horizon.

A strong showing at the Copa America could enable several stars to virtually lock down their positions and establish themselves as key figures in Berhalter's plans for years to come.

Copa America Dark Horses?

Coming off the back of their CONCACAF Nations League triumph in March, the United States enter the Copa America as a potential dark horse to lift the trophy.

This is only the fifth time that the Stars and Stripes have taken part in the tournament, but they reached the semi-finals twice before - in 1995 and 2016 - and have a deeper pool of players available this time around.

The leader of that strong core is talismanic Milan star Christian Pulisic, who captains the side, while the squad also features Premier League quality in the form of Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson, and Chris Richards.

With home advantage on their side, the United States could be capable of springing a surprise and making a deep run in the Copa America.

Their familiarity with the conditions and the support of the home crowd could give them an edge in their quest for glory.

Reyna Renaissance?

One player who could potentially steal the spotlight at the 2024 Copa America is Borussia Dortmund attacker Giovanni Reyna.

Fresh off an impressive run of form for the United States national team, Reyna will be looking to carry his momentum into the tournament.

Despite enduring a difficult loan spell at Nottingham Forest, where he logged just 231 minutes of action and started only two games, Reyna has a chance to rediscover his best form this summer.

He was named in Berhalter’s starting XI for Wednesday’s 1-1 international friendly draw with four-time World Cup winners Brazil and held his own against the likes of Samba stars Bruno Guimaraes and Lucas Paqueta.

Reyna could be poised for a breakout performance on the international stage this summer, and if there is no room for him at Dortmund then there is no better shop window for him to earn a transfer elsewhere.

It is important for the 21-year-old, who admitted he was devastated not to get more minutes at the 2022 World Cup, to play regularly ahead of his second crack at winning the competition.

And that is because there is a wealth of talent looking to break into the squad and take his place while the likes of Monaco marksman Folarin Balogun and PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi represent two young players in the current squad who could be due to make the breakthrough at the Copa America.

As the anticipation builds, Berhalter's boys will be determined to seize the opportunity and make a statement on home soil, potentially setting the stage for an even grander performance at the 2026 World Cup.
