Alexander Volkanovski fell short in his aim of winning the UFC Lightweight Championship in October, so he returns to the lightweight division looking to defend his title against Ilia Topuria.
The much-awaited fight is the highlight of what looks set to be another enthralling UFC card and here we pick out the crucial information for what is set to be a busy night of high-octane action.
UFC 298: Volkanovski v Topuria will take place on Saturday 17th February 2024.
The prelims are set to get underway at 11PM UK time, with the main card expected to start around 3AM.
UFC 298 is set to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. It is home to the National Hockey League team the Anaheim Ducks and has a capacity of 18,900.
The arena has hosted many UFC events over the years, starting with UFC 59 in 2006. UFC 270: Ngannou vs. Gane was the latest event from the promotion to take place in the Honda Center.
As well as that, the arena has hosted concerts, WWE wrestling and basketball games.
The entire card will be available to watch on TNT Sports.
The UFC Featherweight Championship belt will be up for grabs in the main event.
Alexander Volkanovski has a record of 26 wins and three losses from 29 professional MMA fights.
Of his 26 victories, 13 have come by way of knockout, three have come by submission and ten have come on the judges’ scorecards.
Two of his three defeats have come by way of knockout, with one by decision.
Volkanovski made his UFC debut with a win over Yusuke Kasuya in November 2016, before racking up ten victories in a row, including wins over Jose Aldo, a trio of victories over Max Holloway and Brian Ortega.
The Australian first won the Featherweight Championship against Holloway in 2019, before defending it five times in a row.
A move to featherweight to fight Islam Makhachev in February 2023 saw Volkanovski lose his first fight in the UFC.
The 35-year-old bounced back with a return to featherweight to get the better of Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 in July of the same year, before a rematch with Makhachev in October.
Volkanovski fell short again, being knocked out by Makhachev at short notice as he again attempted to win the UFC Lightweight Championship.
Now the champion returns to featherweight to defend his crown.
Ilia Topuria is a rising star of the UFC with a record of 14 wins from 14 professional mixed martial arts bouts.
The Georgian has eight submission victories in that time, four have come by way of knockout and two have come on the judges’ scorecards.
Topuria began his UFC career with a win over Youssef Zalal in October 2020 and then recorded victories over Damon Jackson and Ryan Hall respectively.
The 26-year-old then got the better of Jai Herbert on his lightweight debut in March 2022.
Topuria then returned to featherweight to pick up a submission victory over Bryce Mitchell at UFC 282 in December of that year.
Last time out the Georgian headlined UFC on ABC: Emmett vs. Topuria and picked up the decision victory over Josh Emmett in a bout that also won Fight of the Night.
The young fighter has continually seen his star rise throughout his short career in the UFC and now gets a chance at his biggest fight yet with the title on the line.
