In purist terms, there is little to be enthused about in Tyson Fury v Francis Ngannou.
Two combat sports coming together to create a mega event, not a mega fight.
In one corner, a 6ft 9ins boxing heavyweight, undefeated in 34 fights and the current WBC champion who is 1/10 to notch up another victory. In the opposite corner stands 6/1 shot Francis Ngannou, a fighter who has never competed in a boxing match inside a professional ring.
In the UFC Ngannou was a champion, feared and one of the most devastating strikers in MMA. To assess this as a boxing match is a waste of time; Fury is a master pugilist and Ngannou, a devastating puncher.
There are so many questions the UFC star has to answer on the night...
How will he close the distance to use his power?
How will he dodge Fury’s jab?
Will stamina let him down?
Will he grapple if doesn’t get his own way?
How can overcome the size difference?
Will he even land a meaningful punch?
With all that said, sadly, boxing is a business first and foremost.
This is not a landmark moment in the sport’s history or anything to panic about given the number of stellar matchups we’ve seen in 2023 so far and still to come; Fury v Ngannou is about one thing and one thing only.
