Trent Alexander-Arnold transfer latest: Contract options and career achievements

Trent Alexander-Arnold's career has been under increased scrutiny in recent months, following the departure of Jurgen Klopp and a contract situation that is awaiting clarity.

Liverpool's former sporting director, Michael Edwards, returned to the club as the chief executive of football and he is renowned for his ability to work behind the scenes, avoiding public spectacles.

However, with the quality that Alexander-Arnold's possesses, it is no shock that a diminishing contract is raising concerns for Liverpool supporters.

We examine Alexander-Arnold's contract situation and why he is wanted by European giants, Real Madrid.

Contract situation

Alexander-Arnold's contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025 and come January, the Liverpool academy graduate is free to negotiate with other clubs.

Liverpool's right-back signed his latest contract in 2021 after stating in 2019 that "There is nowhere else I’d rather be than Liverpool."

Five years on from this quote, he has never been closer to leaving the Reds, with a decision on his future surely looming.

Career options:

Stay at Liverpool

While there is growing talk of Alexander-Arnold departing Liverpool on a free transfer, he has given no public indication that his time at Liverpool is over.

In the past, the Liverpool-born sensation has emphasised his desire to one day become captain of the club he joined at just six years old.

Nonetheless, we can't ignore Alexander-Arnold's aspiration to win trophies, and with the recent exit of Klopp, a manager who awarded the 26-year-old the vice-captaincy last year, he may feel his development is best served away from the club.

That said, Alexander-Arnold is part of a Liverpool defence that has conceded the least league goals this season. He is also the player with the most through balls (four), most crosses (35), most tackles (21) and third most interceptions (6) at Liverpool.

So, who's to say Liverpool is not the best place for him to be?

Move to Real Madrid

It is no surprise that one of England's biggest talents in recent years is attracting interest from 15-time European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners, Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are reportedly set to make Alexander-Arnold their main priority come January, with the possibility of signing a player of his ability on a free transfer one that will excite Real fans.

Real Madrid's loyal servant Dani Carvajal is set to turn 33 in January, and with no replacement lined up internally, Alexander-Arnold looks an enticing candidate, especially if they can snap him up on a free transfer.

While this transfer makes so much sense for the Spanish giants, is this move the right one for Alexander-Arnold himself?

The full-back has a huge decision to make in the coming months, with a choice that could guarantee one of two things. Trophies, or legacy.

Given Real's track-record, a move to Spain would likely guarantee trophies for years to come. However, this move would likely come at the expense of his reputation back in Liverpool.

Move to Real Madrid and add to his honours, or sign a contract at Liverpool and earn legendary status in the club's history?

Club achievements

Liverpool

Since breaking through the ranks at Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has won all there is to win domestically for Liverpool.

The Liverpudlian has won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup (twice) and the FA Community Shield.

While former Liverpool-born greats such as Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher were unable to win the Premier League in their long spells at the club, Alexander-Arnold did so by the age of 21.

To add to his domestic successes, he has won the biggest European honour of them all, the UEFA Champions League. Astonishingly, this was his first piece of silverware at Liverpool, coming after a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid, 2019.

He and Klopp's Liverpool followed this up by earning victories in the UEFA Super Cup final and the FIFA Club World Cup final in the 2019/20 season, earning Liverpool the right to name themselves not just the champions of Europe, but the champions of the world.

England

Alexander-Arnold may be slightly disappointed with his England career up to now.

While he has featured in two World Cups for his nation, as well as a Euros campaign which saw England reach the final, the full-back's involvement has been scarce to say the least, starting only two of seven games in the latest Euros. Neither of these starts were in his natural right-back position.

The introduction of interim manager Lee Carsley has been beneficial for Alexander-Arnold's international career, with the full-back being named man of the match in all four of England's wins under Carsley.

With former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel set to take charge in January, we are yet to see what role Alexander-Arnold will have going forward for England.

Individual achievements

From an individual stance, Alexander-Arnold's honours are up there with the best to have played in his position.

In his early career, he was awarded Liverpool's Young Player of the Season in back-to-back campaigns (2016/17 and 2017/18).

He has been named in the PFA Team of the Year on three occasions and been awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year once.

His talent and output hasn't just been noticed in England however, as in 2019 he was named in the UEFA Team of the Year, as well as the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season. He was included in this team once again in the 2021/22 season.

At just 26-years-old, Alexander-Arnold is already one of the most decorated right backs to have played in the Premier League.

Only time will tell if he is to add to his accolades at the top of English football, or if he is to take his services elsewhere and impress abroad.
