Five right-back options to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold's protracted transfer saga appears to be nearing a conclusion with the Liverpool ace reportedly set to join Real Madrid in the summer.

The 26-year-old has been the subject of intense transfer speculation for over a year and with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, Alexander-Arnold is on the verge of completing a deal which will see him swap Anfield for the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alexander-Arnold's departure will leave a gaping void in Arne Slot's creative armoury and there is great intrigue as to who Liverpool will recruit as his replacement, although the presence of Conor Bradley suggests they may already possess a ready-made solution.

From Bundesliga stars to former Slot prospects, we've taken a look at the players that could replace Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool.

Premier League

Conor Bradley

Northern Ireland star Conor Bradley doesn't flaunt Alexander-Arnold's impeccable distribution and there are limitations to his attacking play, but he could possibly save Liverpool millions in the summer if rewarded with the starting berth that he's auditioned excellently for.

Bradley's grown accustomed to a minor role but when called upon to deputise in the absence of Alexander-Arnold, the 21-year-old has showcased his immense talent and rounded skillset.

Receiving significant praise for his influence in Liverpool's 2023/24 EFL Cup final triumph, Bradley starred in the Reds' 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League as he neutralised the threat of Kylian Mbappe and lay on the assist for Alexis Mac Allister's goal.

Liverpool could do far worse in the summer window.

Jeremie Frimpong

Club: Bayer Leverkusen

A vital component in Bayer Leverkusen's maiden Bundesliga triumph last term, Jeremie Frimpong has excelled under the supervision of former Reds star Xabi Alonso and inevitably courted the attention of Europe's biggest clubs.

On 15 goal contributions for the season having racked up 24 in the previous campaign, Frimpong's staggering productivity makes him an ideal fit when it comes to replacing the inventiveness of Alexander-Arnold, while his exhilarating speed and agility would provide a useful outlet for Slot's charges.

The main drawback of pursuing Frimpong is the cost to prise him away from the BayArena, with the Netherlands international valued at €70m.

Lutsharel Geertruida

Club: RB Leipzig

Liverpool were reportedly considering an offer for Lutsharel Geertruida in the previous summer transfer window until Slot stalled on the move and the right-back departed Feyenoord for RB Leipzig.

Geertruida's versatility resulted in the 24-year-old emerging as one of Slot's most trusted allies during Feyenoord's Eredivisie triumph of 2022/23. Able to operate in central defence or even in midfield, the Netherlands ace is a force to be reckoned with in one-on-one duels, whether it be attacking or defending.

A deal for Geertruida would seem easily accomplishable if Slot were willing to reacquaint with his former De Kuip star.

Givairo Read

Club: Feyenoord

Debuting under Slot last season in the Europa League at the age of 17, Givairo Read could be a long-term fix to Liverpool's new right-back conundrum.

Read's prodigious ascendancy has captured the attention of numerous suitors and while he's demonstrated his defensive proficiency, the Feyenoord teenager is an enterprising wing-back who loves to maraud down the flank.

Whether a move to Liverpool is too soon in his fledgling career is up for debate, but the capture of Read would be a visionary acquisition which could futureproof the right-back slot for many years.

Vanderson

Club: Monaco

The highly-rated Vanderson has evolved into one of Europe's standout full-backs and the Brazilian has been heavily linked with Barcelona.

Renowned for his excellent positioning, strength in tackle and overall defensive attributes, Vanderson's competence in possession means the 23-year-old is capable of fulfilling a hybrid full-back role.

His attacking output is an area for improvement and probably detracts from his appeal to Liverpool, while Monaco are understood to value him at €40m.
