Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their new head coach following last week's dismissal of Ange Postecoglou.
While Postecoglou had the backing of lots of fans and players for his masterminding of the Europa League triumph, Tottenham's 17th-placed finish in the Premier League had ultimately rendered his job untenable.
Reports initially emerged that Postecoglou was set to go regardless of their Europa League fortunes and that has proven to be the case. Numerous Premier League managers were quickly linked with the job including Andoni Iraola, Kieran McKenna, Marco Silva and former boss Mauricio Pochettino, but it's another Premier League head coach who has got the nod.
Frank has won countless admirers for his work in West London since being promoted to Brentford head coach in October 2018 although the transition was far from seamless at the start.
With Brentford well in the play-off hunt at the time of Dean Smith's departure, the Bees picked up just four points from Frank's first 10 games in charge, falling to 20th in the table before a turnaround in form saw them finish safely in mid-table.
Brentford kicked in massively from there, finishing third in Frank's first full season in charge, going up as play-off winners the seasn after before establishing themselves as part of the Premier League furniture.
Despite spending less money than their rivals, Brentford routinely punched above their weight thanks to Frank's tactical aptitude, finishing 13th, ninth, 16th and 10th in their four seasons in the top flight.
Frank has shown a pragmatism in his time with Brentford rather than being wedded to a particular style and it's seen them beat Manchester United more than once, doing the double over Pep Guardiola Manchester City in 2022/23 - the same season they also beat Liverpool at home as well as Chelsea and Tottenham away.
Frank's ability to work on a budget and get the best out of his players no doubt appealed to chairman Daniel Levy, who's been criticised for supposedly holding Tottenham back and not spending as much as the club could.
While some Spurs fans may baulk at the idea of sacking someone who's won trophies all over the world for someone who's never won any silverware, Frank ought to get the club competing in the Premier League again, and Spurs are 4/1 to win a trophy in Frank's first season.
bet365's Steve Freeth said: "We’ll soon find out whether Spurs were right to get rid of Ange Postecoglou after 17 years without any silverware with the change not universally popular with the fanbase.
"Setting aside trophies and emotion, Spurs lost 22 Premier League games and finished one spot above the relegation zone, while Frank has consistently punched above his weight at Brentford.
"He might have to prove himself to some players as well as the doubters, but a few wins, and of course, more silverware will soon change that."
