Ange Postecoglou has been backed to stay in charge of Tottenham with his price to be Spurs manager at the start of next season shortening from 5/4 to 1/2.
Virtually all the noises coming out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium pointed towards the Australian leaving the club after their Europa League final win, but bet365 customers are taking the ‘no news is good news’ approach.
It’s been 10 days since the end of the season, where Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat at home to Brighton consigned them to an embarrassing 17th-place finish.
But for their backs-to-the-wall win over Manchester United in the Europa League final, it would be hard to see Postecoglou still in a job, but the victory that secured UEFA Champions League football appears to have given Daniel Levy pause for thought.
A number of managers have been linked with the job ever since reports in April that suggested Postecoglou would be sacked regardless of any success in the Europa League.
Former boss Mauricio Pochettino is one name with Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola three current Premier League bosses also touted to make a move to North London. Michael Carrick’s name is the latest thrown into the hat as a former Spurs player and newly available head coach following his dismissal from Middlesbrough.
It’s Brentford’s Thomas Frank who appears to be leading the race should Postecoglou get the sack, however, priced at 13/8 – though on the drift in recent days – to be in charge on 16th August.
bet365’s Sports and Trading expert Steve Freeth said: “There may be some doubters in the Spurs boardroom, but Ange Postecoglou continues to prove popular among our customers, while Thomas Frank continues to attract attention.
“Over the last 24 hours, we have witnessed the strongest support since the Europa League final for there to be no change in the dugout, with all the substantial wagers being placed on the Australian, causing his price to shorten from 5/4 to 1/2.”
Although Postecoglou still has another two years to run on his contract, so prevalent has the speculation been surrounding his future, it feels the club will need to make an announcement to confirm whether he’s staying or going.
While the Europa League final is a night that will never be forgotten by Tottenham fans, the campaign leading to it bordered on farcical at times; around the halfway mark of the season, Spurs just took five points from 10 games, with their only win in that time being a 5-0 win over Southampton.
They also won just one of their final 12 games of the season – also coming against relegated Southampton, and will need to improve substantially if they’re to make a return to Europe’s top table in the 2026/27 season.
