MLB: Top Draft Prospects for 2023

With the New Year now upon us we take a look at who the top draft prospects are for the year, here are some of the leading candidates to be selected in the Draft of 2023.

Dylan Crews, outfielder, LSU

Last year, LSU’s Jacob Berry was selected sixth overall by the Miami Marlins. His former team-mate might go even higher.

Dylan Crews is predicted to be the number one draft pick for 2023, he had an outstanding freshman campaign when he hit .362 with 18 home runs and 12 stolen bases.

He recorded almost the same in 2022 when he averaged .349 with the bat and hit 22 home runs with five stolen bases.

The right-hander has been praised for having a well-rounded approach at the plate with a good eye and power. LSU have only had one first overall pick, Ben McDonald to the Baltimore Orioles in 1989, Crews could be the second.

Favourites to get Crews, could be the Pittsburgh Pirates (who are allocated the number one pick after the 2022 Winter Meetings). Also in the mix are the Washington Nationals and the Oakland Athletics.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are 150/1 to win the 2023 World Series.

Chase Dollander, right-handed pitcher, Tennessee

In 2022, the Tennessee Volunteers’ pitching staff was exceptional. Pitching to a collective 2.51 ERA and helping guide the Volunteers to a 57-9 finish in their season.

No-one was better than Chase Dollander though in the rotation, the hard-throwing right-hander had a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances (14 starts) with 108 strikeouts in 79 innings while only walking 13.

Dollander can hit the upper 90’s with his fastball and included in his armoury is a slider, changeup and curveball.

Dollander should be the first pitcher to be selected and while the Pirates could be the team to pick him, again the Nationals could be a side to require pitching as part of their rebuild, the Detroit Tigers join the mix as they have the third pick.

The Tigers are 80/1 to win the World Series.

Wyatt Langford, outfielder, Florida

Wyatt Langford should challenge Crews as the number one batter in the top prospect list.

After a short season in 2021, Langford excelled in 2022 in a dominant Florida line-up, hitting 26 home runs and stealing seven bases while a batting average of .355 keeps most clubs interested.

Langford can play all three outfield positions, even fill in if required infield and possibly catcher.

If the Pirates nab Crews as expected, then the Nationals should be more than interested in Langford with his all-round ability.

The Washington Nationals are 300/1 to win the 2023 World Series.

MLB: Biggest names still on the Free-Agent market

Jacob Gonzalez, shortstop, Ole Miss

One of the leading players on the 2022 national champion Rebels, Jacob Gonzalez had a bit of a down year after breaking out as a freshman.

His first year in Oxford saw him hit .355 batting average with 12 home runs and 38 walks with 34 strikeouts. The numbers took a dip in 2022, but were still impressive at .273 with 50 walks and 32 strikeouts.

The numbers still point to one of the stronger bats at shortstop position in the class of 2023, which may mean he gets selected quite high in the draft especially with his ability to defend at perhaps the premium place of shortstop.

Max Clark, outfielder, Franklin High

Max Clark is the first high-schooler on the list and he still might get a high position in the draft. Clark has power and has been noted for his line-drive approach at the plate.

Despite a verbal commitment to Vanderbilt, we’ll see if Clark gets drafted.

Walker Jenkins, outfielder, South Brunswick High

While Clark is the top high scholar in the draft for now, Walker Jenkins could climb the ladder with a healthy senior year. Jenkins has had a few injury problems but appears to have dealt with them and has had plenty of power at the plate.

Jenkins can play all three outfield positions and has speed so that increases his ability. At the moment, he has a commitment to North Carolina, but we shall see if that changes.

Bradfield only hit nine home runs in 129 collegiate games, however he is the fastest player in his class, having stolen 93 bases including an impressive 46 steals in 2022.

Bradfield has a .326 batting average though and plenty of discipline at the plate and an impressive defence. He would be a good pick with an all-round ability.
